Save Sydney Fox Rescue - Say no to the PCO

  • by: Sydney Fox Rescue
  • target: Minister for Primary Industries Niall Blair and the Local Land Services New South Wales

From this September onwards thousands of orphaned and injured fox kits will be born and killed at the hands of the New South Wales Government and the Local Land Services. Their only crime? Being born a fox.

Foxes are running out of time and they need your help. Oppose the Pest Control Order and the ban on private ownership of foxes. Allow the continued rescue and rehoming of orphaned and injured foxes in need this September.

What the PCO means for foxes:

-Rescuing foxes is now illegal
-Rehoming foxes is now illegal
-Foxes in need are unable to legally access vet care
-Transporting foxes (even for veterinary care) is illegal
-All foxes who are orphaned and injured are now meant to be euthanised

The New South Wales Government has tried to shut down and silence Sydney Fox Rescue, the only “No-Kill” option for foxes in Australia, but we will not be silenced in our fight for these incredible animals.

Why SFR opposes the PCO:

-Just because something is legal that doesn’t make it right
-None of our foxes are ever released. Every fox in our care is one less fox in the wild.
-The PCO means more orphaned foxes with no adequate system to ensure their welfare, these orphans will be left to starve
-Banning the transport of injured foxes to a vet is a form of animal cruelty
-Without regulation and an authorised rescue program, illegal fox ownership will become rampant and there is no way to ensure access to vet care and adequate husbandry for these animals.

What we have learnt through our rehoming program:

-Australian’s want a no-kill option for foxes in need
-Rural and Urban communities alike support Sydney Fox Rescue
-Foxes can be successfully socialised and kept in captivity
-There are many every day Australian’s ready to welcome a fox into their home
-Desexed, microchipped, vaccinated foxes who are kept in secure enclosures pose no more threat to the environment or the public than an average cat or dog kept by a responsible owner.
-Captive foxes can provide useful samples for research and native animal rehabilitation programs

To the The Hon. Niall Mark Blair, the Department of Primary Industries and the Local Land Services New South Wales,

I am writing with regards to the Pest Control Order for Red Foxes and the Local Land Services decision to cease issuing permits for fox ownership in New South Wales, preventing the rescue and rehoming of foxes in need.

I am writing to show my support and solidarity for Sydney Fox Rescue (SFR) and call for an end to the ban on private fox ownership and the rescuing of foxes in need.

Since 2012 SFR have worked tirelessly to rescue, care for, desex and rehome a variety of introduced species with a particular focus on foxes. Unfortunately as an introduced species in Australia, the welfare of foxes often falls through the cracks. We as Australians consistently fail to stand up and take responsibility for animals we brought to this country and I believe foxes deserve better.

Why I oppose the Pest Control Order:

-None of the SFR rescue foxes are ever released. Every fox rescued is one less fox in the wild.

Why I support Sydney Fox Rescue:

-Foxes can be successfully socialised and kept in captivity

-There are many every day Australian’s ready to welcome a fox into their home

-Desexed, microchipped, vaccinated foxes who are kept in secure enclosures pose no more threat to the environment or the public than an average cat or dog kept by a responsible owner.

-Captive foxes can provide useful samples for research and native animal rehabilitation programs

Finally, I support Sydney Fox Rescue because believe that Australia needs a no-kill rescue option for foxes. By taking away this option the New South Wales Government has jeopardised the welfare of thousands of animals in need.

I strongly urge the Minister, DPI and LLS to reconsider their position on the PCO and fox rescue in New South Wales. Just because something is legal it doesn’t make it right.

Yours Sincerely,
