A HEAVILY-shackled 14-year-old boy, who is suspected of being sexually abused, has appeared in court accused of shooting his sleeping father dead with a high-powered rifle.

US teenager Zachary Neagle, a middle school student from Caldwell, Idaho, is being held in an adult prison after being charged with first degree murder, the Idaho Press-Tribune reports.

His father, 33-year-old Jason Neagle, was found dead at the family home on Saturday.

A single bullet is believed to have pierced through his wrist and into his head.

During his first court appearance since his arrest on Tuesday, the teenager sat silently as a judge read out the accusation that he had shot his father with a high-powered rifle as he slept on a couch.

Zachary did not speak during the hearing. He sat in the courtroom with shackles attached to his hands and torso, and was wearing a prison uniform.

Canyon County Prosecutor John Bujak said a possible motive had been identified, but would not reveal any details.

The Press-Tribune reported that a family member had suspected that the dead man was abusing his son.

Caldwell detective Bill Crawford told reporters that Zachary had told officers on Tuesday that his father "had not done anything to him for a while", but did not elaborate.

The teenager will face court again in two weeks, and his bail has been set at US$300,000.

This is a child, not an adult! We need to protect our children, he should be counseled and rehabilitated, not thrown into an adult jail! He will come out a hardened criminal. This is a travesty.

It is rediculous to arrest and try a young boy for protecting himself and his siblings. Let him go and give him the professional help he needs!

In my opinion, judging an 14 year old boy as an adult is wrong.

Holding a 14 year old in an adult prison and charging him as an adult. This is a miscarriage of justice, and the boy will be ruined for life regardless of the outcome after such horrendous experiences. Where in the world has common sense gone to?

First of all, the practice of trying children as adults in this country is egregious. Since Zachary is a child, he is incapable of making the mature decisions expected of an adult. Recent studies suggest that the brain's prefrontal lobe, which some scientists speculate plays a crucial role in inhibiting inappropriate behavior, may not reach full development until age 20. Children don't have the intellectual or moral capacity to understand the consequences of their actions; similarly, they lack the same capacity to be trial defendants. Charging Zachary Neagle as an adult with first-degree murder is not justice.

reading background information and seeing the boy's face, i hardly can immagine he has a criminal mind. i think his own father who has gone much too far with his own child(ren), coused this situation in which children didnt have courage too ask for help.

Seriously, I know that Idaho law says anyone over age 14 must be tried as an adult when the charge is first degree mudrder. I am, however, sure that your office makes the determination of the charges to be filed. I will never in a million years understand why you chose 1st degree murder. If the allegations of sexual abuse are true, and you know them to be true, you have a duty to society to make that known, then reduce the charges to manslaughter and ensure that this young man is tried as a juvenile, where he will get the help he needs to deal with the trauma caused by the victim in this case. That is how you should serve your community. Over zealous prosecution is worse than not prosecuting crimes at all.

I would like to suggest the following to call attention to Zachary’s situation: This Halloween, everyone in Caldwell—everyone anywhere who is a supporter of Zachary and justice for young offenders—wear a yellow shirt and pants (black pants if yellow pants are not available) and wrap a chain around your waist (metal or plastic, available at Home Depot or Lowe’s) and maybe even manacle yourself with FAKE handcuffs. You can print a message to Zachary on the back of the shirt. Do it for Zachary. And for kids’ justice. Deborah Clark Ebel, R.N. -- debebel.com

Anyone who has dealt with this personally or with a loved one, knows he is more than likely lying about it being a while since his dad had done anything. He probably is embarressed to admit it had just happened. I am on his side 1000%!!! (I would have shot the guy who messed with me when I was six years old!, If I'da known where to find a gun!! He was my babysitter.)

I have know this young man for a couple of years now and I believe he is the victim here. The courts should DO what is right and get Zach proper assistance. HE IS NOT A CRIMINAL, NOR SHOULD HE BE TREATED LIKE ONE!!!!

I believe Zach should be tried as a juvenile. Please do not waste this child’s life away for I believe he’s not an evil person. He’s just a victim of molestation. I also believe that he was protecting himself & also his siblings when he shot his dad. He ain’t mature enough to stand trial as an adult. Please I believe that he is able to be rehabilitated if he’s being held in a juvenile detention centre with the counseling, studies & other facilities not found in an adult jail system. Thank you.

In our nation, we are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. Holding a fourteen year old boy who is being tried as an adult in an adult prison and shackling him as he has been is unnecessarily extreme. Pull him out of prison and take the shackles off. If he needs to be confined, I'm certain that the juvenile system is more than adequate to meet necessary ends. I look forward to discovery of his motive. If indeed he was doing it in retaliation for some kind of persistent abuse, it is my hope that the court will allow that to heavily influence a ruling. If it was a malicious, senseless act, and the child has no mental defect, the shackles and adult prison will then become entirely necessary, but not until then.

if the accusations are true, that his father had been abusing him, i am totally on his side! my dad has been abusing me since i was little, and ive just about had enough of it! i heard about this shortly after my mom was arrested, and i was living in idaho with her. now im back in oklahoma with my dad. well im actually living with my aunt, but i was with my dad. but thats how i know about this. i was in idaho a few months ago when i heard about it! i am absolutely on his side, unless the accusations of his father are not accurate! JUSTICE FOR ZACH!!!

If they stick him in prison with child molesters, than they themselves are committing a crime, Child Endangerment.

This boy needs help and support, NOT prison! It will destroy him. What good will that do? Please, look to the individual and not the rulebook.
