In the wake of this latest tragedy in Connecticut, I have a personal suggestion that may help put an end to these horrific events and that would be to TRIPLE the national mental health budget NOW!
I suspect the one thing most mentally troubled people need is someone they don't know to talk to and more importantly LISTEN to them before they, you know ... snap and do something that shocks the system and continues to gnaw at our social fabric.
The cost of mental health should be irrelevant at this point. All talk about being "too expensive" is moot right now. Politics aside, this is necessary and just. We need this to happen before any other moves are made. Please help demand the tripling of the federal and state mental health budget The cost will pay for itself in the end.
To ALL members of the US Congress and ALL 50 state legislatures,
In light of the recent events in Connecticut, I think the best plan of action is to triple the mental health budget. These tragedies may have been worse due to the use of guns, but in the end, it was mental illness that ruled the day.
I realize budget talks are not the easiest game in town to play, but you are our leaders. You are the ones who were voted in to do all you can to keep us safe and secure.
It makes little sense to continually slash the social safety net budget to make room for whatever else. When we as a society have the very social fabric torn apart by violence, the politics you people play no longer impresses.
We have many problems in this nation, but this is one that a simple vote to increase the national and state budgets on mental health can help fix.
Please don't allow politics to get in the way here. There are a lot of hurting people out there and ignoring this reality is not going to make it go away.
