The high kill rate at the county's pound, said to be one of the highest in the state with 2,483 dogs euthanized last year, or 80 percent of all dogs taken in. "We could save a lot of dogs but they won't let us," said Rita Bonnell of Rossford,Ohio who operates a rescue shelter and disagrees with the warden's policy against transferring animals to "all-breed" operations other than the Toledo Area Humane Society.Mr. Teneyck said his dog Bear got loose on Aug. 16 and was observed being hit by a silver or gray car. He said his family scoured the neighborhood looking for the dog and visited the county pound on two separate days to see if he was there. Although Bear was not licensed, his name was put on a missing dog list, Mr. Teneyck. Mr. Teneyck said he then received a phone call from the dog warden's office the morning of Aug. 18. He said he was told that they had found his dog with a broken leg. However, in the next breath he was told that they had euthanized the animal that morning.

I would like to know how the funds are being spend that are collected from the dog licenses? You can verify online that Lucas County has one of the highest license fees in the state of Ohio. I understand that Lucas County dog warden does little if any to find homes for any of the homeless dogs that are picked up. The hours of the facility are not accomidating for someone who has lost or found a licensed pet. Part of the point of licensing a pet it to assure it's safe, prompt return to the owner , so they say. The view of certain breeds as far as the dog warden is concerned is unjustified and unfair to the dogs. I understand that alot of the dogs the dog warden encounters are from the inner city and are aggressive. I am employed at a veterinary hospital where I have worked for the last 24 years. Some breeds are inherently aggressive but there are always exceptions. I won't say that I don't approach certain breeds with caution, but because of my experience I realize that they are not all aggressive and many are wonderful companions. It is common sense. I have also been bitten unexpectedly by golden retrievers and Labs. I believe many good dogs are being put to sleep without being given a fair chance to find a loving home. I am aware not all of the unwanted dogs can be found loving homes, but come on, they at least deserve a chance. If they can pass temperment testing they should be given an oppurtunity to have a home.
