There is a pending bill in Congress that seeks to revive and commission the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) in Morong, Bataan.
The BNPP had been found decades ago to be unsafe by a government fact-finding panel known as the Puno Commission prompting two successive Philippine administrations, that of Presidents Cory Aquino and Fidel Ramos, to order its scrapping.
The BNPP is a more than thirty-year-old power plant. It's not a new, safe nuclear reactor. It is said to be located within a fault zone. Over the years, various groups such as Greenpeace, Freedom from Debt Coaltion (FDC), BAYAN, Ibon, Akbayan and others have resisted all attempts to revive the BNPP. Instead of commissioning the BNPP, we recommend instead that the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 be pursued with vigor and seriousness by the Philippine government.
At the time of launch of this petition, Easter Sunday 2009, Prof. Ed Aurelio Reyes of Kamalaysayan is persisting in a seven-day fast together with other fasters to dramatize opposition to the commissioning of the BNPP.
Their sacrifice is honored by our signatures to this petition which also serve as a testament to our commitment to a safe, nuclear-free, renewable-energy-powered future for the Philippines.
To God be the glory!

no to BNPP... we have natural resources which needed a natural means of producing power. nuclear power is not we needed.. it is too much for our needs. the more it produces power, the more it produces corruption! no to BNPP... we have natural resources which needed a natural means of producing power. nuclear power is not we needed.. it is too much for our needs. the more it produces power, the more it produces corruption! |
