Name Prince William's 12th High School in Honor of Colonel (retired) George M. Hampton

Dr. George M Hampton's contributions to Prince William County, the State of Virginia and this country are broad, sustained over decades, and impactful to the community.  His life and service are motivational to the students of Prince William County.

Dr. George Hampton is an active, engaged citizen in Prince William County for more than 45 years. Born in Englewood, NJ in June 1928, he is a widower and father of 2 adult children with one grandchild. He is a member of the First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries, VA.

The life example that Dr. Hampton presents is one that students and adults would want to emulate. He overcame meager beginnings and through education, sacrifice and hard work he persevered to obtain his Doctor of Arts in Education from the University of Central Arizona.  He served his countryin the United States Army and continues to serve Prince William County and Virginia.

Here are some of the exemplars of service and citizenship that make Dr. Hampton one of the best choices for naming the new high school:

From 1967 to 1971, He served as Assistant Professor of Military Science at Virginia
State University training young leaders to join the Army to serve then in Vietnam and go on to put their lives in harm’s way in service to the United States around the world.

From 1967-1969, Dr. Hampton was an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the Far East Division of the University of Maryland.

In 1971, He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the US Army with over 20 years of
service. Dr. Hampton served as the political advisor to the Prince William Branch of the NAACP from 1975-1982. Lending his advice and counsel to the organization to assist in peaceful and swift resolutions to issues in Prince William County and the local area.

In 1978, Dr. Hampton founded G&A Associates to conduct research and training in
human relations that benefited Prince William County and the community.

In 1982 to 1990, He was appointed and served on the Virginia Parole Board. His
leadership, service and insight while serving in that role benefited not only the citizens
of Virginia but helped criminals attempting to peacefully reenter society.

In 1990, Dr. Hampton was appointed Chairman and CEO of the Virginia Alcoholic
Beverage Control Board. He served the state of Virginia in that role until 1994.

From 1994-2002, He was appointed to serve on the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Citizens Advisory Council.

In 1995 to 1999, Dr. Hampton served a 4-year term on the State Board of Elections as Vice-Chairman. The leadership and directions that Dr. Hampton provided to his colleagues would often lead to peaceful solutions when none were in sight.

Dr. Hampton was appointed as the Prince William County representative on the Board of Directors of Northern Virginia Community College from 1997 to 2005.

In 2003 and serving until 2007, Dr Hampton was a member of the Board of Visitors at Virginia State University and a member of the Virginia State University Foundation.

In 2004, the George M. Hampton Foundation was formed to assist the academic
endeavors of Prince William County youth. The foundation has awarded over one hundred thousand dollars in scholarships to Prince William County students. George M. Hampton Foundation Scholarships are open to all graduating seniors in Prince William County.

These examples of citizenship, service, and leadership provide a strong case for considering and naming the new high school for a proven leader and extraordinary citizen.  His legacy will inspire the students of the George M. Hampton High School for generations and help create a rich legacy of scholarship, citizenship, service, and leadership in Prince William County.
