House Republicans: Don't Cut School Lunch!

The 2010 Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act ensures that all students in high-poverty schools receive a nourishing lunch without the stigma of standing in a separate free-lunch line. Under the Act, if 40 percent of students in a school qualify for free lunches, all students at the school are eligible for a free lunch.

House Republicans want to change this. They are pushing to raise the 40 percent threshold of community eligibility to 60 percent, which would affect 7,022 schools serving 3.4 million students. If the bill is passed, all these students would have to reapply for free lunches and stand in lines to prove their eligibility.

For many poverty-stricken students, school lunch is the only full, nutritious meal they will receive. Please sign the petition to urge the House of Representatives to preserve the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act!

I am concerned with House republicans' efforts to revise the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act at poor children's expense.
