Cretes Disgrace

Target:
Leaders of Municipalities throughout CRETE Greece.
Sponsored by:

In Greece, the problem concerning stray animals is not something new or unknown.

On a daily basis, all animal organisations here on the Island of Crete struggle to meet the needs of the ever increasing numbers of stray, sick, abandoned, and abused animals.

There are Greek Laws which cover basic animal welfare issues, they may leave a lot to be desired but at least they are a start, or so we thought.

Sadly however, even these basic laws are NOT enforced, a situation which is deplorable and can no longer be ignored.

Every day the media receive letters from Greek citizens, tourists and organisations regarding the terrible plight of these animals but still the situation here remains unchanged.

Law 3170/2003 was legislated before the Olympic Games of 2004 after pressure from the EU and shamefully has never been enforced. In addition, paragraph 10 of article 75/law 3463/2006, specifies that municipalities are responsible for the collection and care of stray animals. They are also responsible for the construction of shelters as well as, the observance of the law regarding companionship animals.

BUT - The enforcement of all of these laws has been systematically ignored.

Can you please help?

It will only be through constant unwavering persistence and pressure that the relevant authorities will take note and act.

It's a simple matter to add a signature to a petition but you can do so much more to help.

Please send this petition to everyone you know who cares about animals in distress and ask them to sign too.

The aim behind this petition is simply to request that the Municipalities of Crete enforce their own animal welfare Laws now.

Along with this of course is to enforce the penalties against the offenders.

In addition there needs to be a recognised course of action that citizens and visitors can take when they find or witness animal cruelty and abuse.

Help stop the abuse of animals in Crete and set about resolving the dreadful plight of stray, injured and sick animals.

Crete is a beautiful Island totally blighted by the many instances of animal neglect and cruelty

There is no need for this.

We the undersigned,

Request that the Greek laws concerning the welfare of animals be implemented and enforced.
We believe that a genuine effort to tackle the present distressing lack of animal welfare would not only benefit Crete but all of Greece.
Good animal welfare and care is a concern for many prospective tourists.
When Greece is able to proudly boast her provision of such welfare she may well and deservedly, achieve an increase of tourists to this beautiful country.
We respectfully ask that you enforce your own Animal welfare laws immediately and we thank you for taking the time to read our request.

Sincerely

The people who do this to the animals are inhuman, I hope the government act as soon as possible. Greece are in urgent need for a body like the RSPCA to look after the welfare of these animals.

I've always wanted to visit Greece, but after seeing the animal situation there, there is no way in hell I'd ever go there. It is a DISGRACE for this country and for it's people. They should not consider themselves a civilised country, if helpless animals are abused there.

A human should not be calpable of inflictig abuse on any other creature. It should not exist in mind. Sadly it does and the municipalities, by refusing to administer the law, are as guilty as the worst abuser. Tye shoulg hang their heads in shame.

It is a discrace. I live in South Africa and our government is just as bad as the greek government. The only difference is that you can expect it from Africa, but Europe!? You should be ashamed. If you can't treat your animals with dignity and enforce laws onto those who don't know better then how can you expect to be treated the same by your fellow humans.
