On 22nd May 25 year old Tracey Connolly, her boyfriend Steven Barker, and their lodger, Barker's brother Jason Owen, were sentenced for causing or allowing the death of Connolly's 17 month old son, Peter.
Over a period of months, Peter was tortured, starved, abused, and finally robbed of his life, by the people who were supposed to care for him.
Yet the sadistic trio could be walking our streets again in as little as 3 years, 8 years, and 3 years respectively.
Any one of a catalog of horrendous assaults could easily have killed the toddler. It's not known which one finally did. Perhaps it was slamming him face first into a brick wall, or punching him so hard he swallowed a tooth, or whatever assault caused his untreated broken back.
The law as it stands in relation to domestic abuse and killing is inadequate. The law used to convict the trio, the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004, was created mainly to close a loophole whereby domestic killers could evade a murder conviction because it was not known which of 2 or more individuals was responsible for the fatal act, and they would each blame the other. Welcome though this legislation was, the maximum penalty, even for the most extreme cases, was fixed at 14 years, which is how people guilty of such appalling atrocities got away with such risible sentences.
The logic is inescapable that the loophole will only be properly closed when the maximum penalty is changed so that the option is there, for the most extreme cases, of a life sentence. Such cases are sadly not unique, and it must be right that the option is available for cases of the most unrestrained brutality behind closed doors.
Steven Barker, in particular, who is known to have been the main perpetrator, is a man of the most appalling wickedness. He has also been convicted of the rape of Peter's then 2 year old sister, and has previous convictions for cruelty to animals. This monster is not fit to walk our streets and never will be. Jason Owen, Barker's brother, is a convicted paedophile. The two brothers are also suspected of having repeatedly terrorized and viciously assaulted their own grandmother prior to her death.
The law needs to toughen up on child abusers and domestic killers by changing to a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for the most extreme cases of domestic killing.
Send a message to domestic killers that 4 walls will not protect them from justice.
For Peter and the unknown.

Dear Mr Brown
We the undersigned, hope that you will consider this petition to amend the law in relation to extreme cases of domestic killing.
The recent case Baby Peter exposed the inadequacy of the current law in relation to these offences. The Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004 was created mainly to close a loophole whereby domestic killers could evade a murder conviction where it was unknown which of 2 or more individuals was responsible for the fatal act and they would blame each other. Welcome though this legislation was, the maximum penalty, even for the most extreme cases, was fixed at 14 years, which is how people guilty of such appalling atrocities got away with such risible sentences. While the review which is currently underway for this particualr case is very welcome, any increase will still be constrained by the current law, and offers no protection for future victims of extreme domestic abuse.
The logic is inescapable that the loophole will not be properly closed until the maximum penalty is changed so that the option is there for the most extreme cases, of a life sentence. Such cases are sadly not unique, and it must be right that the option is there for cases of the most unrestrained brutality behind closed doors.
The law needs to toughen up on child abusers and domestic killers by changing to a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for the most extreme cases of domestic killing.
The risible sentences given to Peter's killers send a terrible message to people who could be committing extreme domestic abuse right now.
Please send this message to domestic killers that 4 walls will not protect them from justice.
For Peter and the unknown.

this is the saddest story i ever hard. these people should suffer the same things inflicted on that poor baby. they should not be allowed to walk free with so little punishment.

I first read this story a few weeks ago, and it really pulled my heart strings more than anything has ever done. I am so saddened that this litte boy was tortured, and I wish that I could have pulled him out of the world that he knew and put him into my loving world. I give my kids (I have 4, one is Peters age when the first abuse was documented: 10 months)extra kisses and hugs at night after reading this story and am extremely bothered by the sentencing of these 3 monsters. They are getting off way too easy! keep them in jail until the day they die!

I would have taken Peter into my home and loved him with all my heart. I have cried for three days over this and I know Peter's story will forever be with me. He is always in my heart and I know that he is in such a perfect place now...somewhere that he is loved and taken care of...no more pain

The system failed him once by allowing him to be abused, don't fail him again by allowing the people who murdered him to walk free...

As a mother this story not only ripped out my heart, but filled me with so much rage. These people are evil. They deserve more than just prison. They deserve to feel the pain and torture they inflicted on a helpless child. They should never be allowed to see day light. And they should DEFINATELY never be given the chance to do this to another child. Please make sure they are sentanced to life!

People that hurt children most espicially are horrible monsters who should have no wrights what so ever.
I was married to a very abusive man, I never thought he would hurt my children or animals. How wrong I was! He sexually abused my two nieces and my oldest daughter, we are still not sure about my youngest daughter.
When I found out about the girls and my dogs I left and called DHS,there is now a perminante no contact order for him and his whole family, he has been orderd to domestic violence and sex offender clases yet will not take them.
People like this need to be stopped. I will do anything to help with this for baby Peter or any other child and animal.
This family and Peter along with many others shall remain in our prayersGod Bless,
Deborah Renneberger

I feel sick to my stomach! I wish these people would die a thousand painful deaths! If I ever saw these people I would make them endure what this precious child was forced to endure! Shame on Social Services for not protecting this child! What a sick... system! The people who returned this child to the dangerous environment are just as responsible for his death as the actual murderers! I hope it eats away at them for the rest of their lives!

This is the problem! The punishment is not enough for the crime and loss of a childs life. What example is this punishment setting for others that could do this. This poor child had to suffered to his death and the people responsible will be free again and able to live the rest of thier lives. Peter, this innocent child doesn't get that chance.

I have 22 month old twin boys, and it just makes me physically sick to think of what this poor little angel had to endure. I hug my babies extra in memory of Little Peter;every child deserves to feel love & safety, especially when they're that little. Those monsters deserve to sit in jail the REST OF THIER LIVES!!! DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO ANOTHER CHILD!!!

i think what they did was horricic. I am in school and choose to do my last essay on child abuse when i ran across baby Peter's story i cryed and cryed. I feel like I need grief counceling over this... and i never knew this baby. if i did i would have done everything to help him. but i didnt and i am very anger to see that his killers didnt get anything hardly... they need to hang or spent the rest of thier sad lifes in prison... why should they be breathing when they killed someone so innocent and so pure... Please put a end to this madness!!!

These 2 monsters should never, ever, be free to walk the streets and inflict their hideous perversions on other innocent beings. The sentence in this case is an appalling travesty of justice.

The deliberate death of a child should automatically be life/death sentence. Not to mention the fact that in this case he also raped a 2 year old & was cruel to animals. Those who inflicted this should never see the light of day EVER!
