Every Worker Deserves Paid Sick Leave

Right-wing group American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is at it again. Now, they're pushing for laws that will block sick leave pay for workers.

In Florida, Governor Scott recently signed a "preemptive bill" that would block any and all sick leave pay laws from being passed in the future.

Republican Majority Leader Steve Precourt, an active member of ALEC, put together the Florida bill, which trampled upon a citizens' grassroots effort in Orange County to put the issue of sick pay on the 2014 ballot.

Despite studies showing that sick leave pay has no negative effect on business profits and others showing a positive effect, big business has been resisting pro-sick leave legislation nationwide. They baselessly claim that it will "drive up costs."

Paid sick leave is a right, not a privilege. It allows workers to make their health and the health of their coworkers a priority without having to risk not being able to feed their children or pay their rent.

Stand against ALEC's efforts to weaken wage and labor standards by denying workers sick leave.

We, the undersigned, object to ALEC’s continued interference with our democratic process.

From weakening wage and labor standards to setting back state renewable energy standards, to pushing fracking and privatizing education and every other government service, ALEC continues to use its money and influence to buy whatever and whoever it wants to help promote big business interests, making a mockery of our democratic system.

ALEC Exposed says this about ALEC, its tactics and its connections:

ALEC is a corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve “model” bills.

ALEC Exposed also posts a list, by state, of legislators having ALEC ties, and we will be contacting those in our own states to object to the agenda they help promote with their membership fees and other support of ALEC.

We are putting ALEC on notice that in trying to deny people sick leave pay, it has gone too far. Most of the people these preemptive bills affect are already struggling, often working several jobs - many getting only minimum wage - just to make ends meet, and there’s no excuse for this added burden or violation of basic human rights and needs.

We demand that ALEC immediately end its efforts to deny workers sick leave pay.
