Stop All Access to Deadly Areas Around GenOn Power Plant (Avon Lake)

  • by: Laketa Crutchfield
  • recipient: Cities and State Government Officials: Cleveland, Avon Lake and surrounding areas

Avon Lake's Genon Power Plant is not only an environmental hazard but also a deadly trap to boatmen and fishermen. Miller Road Park is where my beloved brother and multiple others have lost their lives. This area in its entirety must be permanently closed and made impenetrable. Known as “the cut,” the site is located near the power plant discharge area. The force of the discharge creates a dangerous rip current that has proven deadly in the past. Anthony Norman's death marks the sixth drowning in this area. At every instance that a death occurs, the media rushes to write bias articles that vividly points out signage that warns potential fishermen and/or swimmers. The media and councilmen/women of Avon Lake City has irresponsibly hidden behind "there are signs posted" statements through 6 deaths. Here is the irony of their indifference: In most cities, an ordinance is enforced that makes dog owners liable for injury or damage if their animal is not leashed or fenced. However, should a company like Genon be exempt in liability of six deaths simply because it is financially beneficial to the region? Moreover, the inaction of the local government indicates its bias for the inflow of capital over the safety of it's residents. Genon is being pursued for massive EPA violations (i.e pollutants that has caused sicknesses), which range from asthma and cancer. Something needs to be done now or we will lose someone else.

Thus far, the media has reported either explaining the circumstances surrounding Anthony Norman's death or they have blamed the victim. On July 4, 2012, Mr. Norman and a few other men prepared themselves for fishing. While fishing, Anthony noticed that the younger of the men had been caught by the deadly current and began to go under. Mr. Anthony immediately rush in the water and pushed him to safety. After saving the young man's life, Mr. Anthony was now  fighting for his own. Other responders could not reach him in time and Mr. Anthony fell victim to rip currents. He was a loved by many and a father of a beautiful girl.

We need your help! Genon company and the Avon Lake City councilmen must act immediately before another life is lost. There is nothing worse than a parent losing their child! We must honor Anthony "Peedee" Norman's sacrifice and heroism by fighting against the assumption that a irresponsible company's contribution to the economy is worth the loss of life. Moreover, we are making an emotional plea for families of past victims to assist us in this endeavor.
