As much as 50% of new immigrants to the United States don't know that they have diabetes, and immigrants are more likely to suffer from many illnesses, like cervical cancer, which they are more likely to die from as well.
Unfortunately, most of these individuals don't have access to quality medical care. In many states, immigrants must wait five years before they can access benefits like Medicaid. A bill that has been introduced, the Health Equity and Access Under the Law for Immigrant Women and Families Act of 2014, would change that, ensuring that all legal immigrants and undocumented ones that have qualified for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) have immediate access to health care.
600,000 of those that have qualified for DACA and 600,000 legal permanent residents would qualify. Waiting five years can severely hurt families, especially those with conditions that need to be treated or diagnosed, or those that don't have prenatal care. These people pay into the system like everyone else -- why shouldn't they receive the same benefits?
Please tell the United States Congress to pass this bill and ensure that immigrants have access to quality health care!
Dear United States Congress,
Recently a bill called the Health Equity and Access Under the Law for Immigrant Women and Families Act of 2014 was introduced. This bill would ensure that immigrant families (including legal ones and those that have qualified for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)) have immediate access to health care instead of having to wait five years to be able to use services like Medicaid.
Five years is too late. Immigrants are more likely to suffer from many illnesses including cervical cancer, which they are more likely to die from as well. 50% of new immigrants don't know they have diabetes when they come to the United States.
These people should have access to the system that they pay into like everyone else. It's also estimated that in states that don't accept the Medicaid expansion from the Affordable Care Act, public hospitals will suffer by $50 billion or more due to uninsured Americans not being able to afford services.
Please pass this bill for immigrant families and for the country as a whole.
Thank you for your time.
