Demand Sussex University supports student Luqman Onikosi against deportation! #DontDeportLuqman

For Luqman, who was a student at the University of Sussex, deportation is a death sentence. He is chronically ill and the medication he needs to stay alive is not available in Nigeria, where his two brothers have already died from the same disease. If he is sent home, he too will die.

Luqman, who began at Sussex in 2007, was diagnosed with hepatitus B in 2009 and has since developed cirrhosis (a chronic liver condition). Due to his condition worsening, Luqman couldn't work, lost his VISA and applied to stay on medical grounds. Whist waiting to hear of this outcome Luqman started a Masters. His second appeal to stay on the grounds of human rights was then rejected.

Instead of showing support for his case, the University of Sussex has revoked his student status. In retaliation, University of Sussex students have occupied Bramber House, an area where business meetings regarding the university's decisions often take place.

On average, international students pay triple the amount of home students, and contribute 2.8bn a year to the economy of London alone, according to the Guardian newspaper. Luqman has been an active and committed student, having co-coordinated 'Black History Month' and co-founded the 'Hear Afrika society'.

Luqman's case shows how immigration policy in the UK is failing. Please sign this petition to demand that the Home Office don't send Luqman Onikosi to his death by deporting him, and that Sussex University support students who face unfair deportation.

Dear Rt. Hon Theresa May,

I’m writing in support of Luqman Onikosi, a student at the University of Sussex. As I’m sure you know, he is soon to be deported back to Nigeria, where there is no definitive long-term treatment for his condition.

For Luqman, who was a student at the University of Sussex, deportation is a therefore death sentence. He has already lost two brothers to the same predicament – which must have hit him very hard – around the time he lost his VISA.

On average, international students pay triple the amount of home students, and contribute 2.8bn a year to the economy of London. Luqman has been an active and committed student.

Luqman's case shows how immigration policy in the UK is failing. I would like to see this reformed in order to accommodate cases like Luqman’s, lest the UK develop the reputation of a wealthy country who sent a young man to his death.

Yours Sincerely,
