Stop Racist, Sexist Trump's Self Promotion: Keep His Name Off This Historic Building

  • by: Irving Burbano

He's said Mexican immigrants are rapists. He demeans women. He worries about black Americans counting his money. He calls children born to immigrant parents "anchor babies."

And once he's finished retrofitting it into a new hotel, Donald Trump's name could be stamped on Washington, DC's Old Postal Building. It's one of the capital's most prominent buildings — and it is on property owned by taxpayers like you and me.

As a proud member of a hardworking Ecuadorian immigrant family in New York, I'm deeply troubled by the hateful antics of this reckless self promoter. As an American, I am outraged.

I shouldn't be the only one who is angry and concerned. When two reported Trump supporters urinated on and then beat a Latino man in Boston in late August, Trump said this:

"I will say that people who are following me are very passionate. They love this country and they want this country to be great again. They are passionate."

No one who diminishes such a despicable hate crime should be President. And he certainly shouldn't be given a place of prominence above the streets of the same city where Cesar Chavez, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, and so many others have shed blood, sweat, and tears for justice and equality.

Please sign my petition now and urge US General Services Administrator Denise Turner Roth to prohibit any prominent signage promoting Donald Trump or any of his companies at Washington, DC's Old Postal Building.

Administrator Turner Roth,

As someone who strongly believes in the importance of American diversity and the power of buildings and monuments to communicate America's values, I strongly urge you to prohibit any prominent display of Donald Trump's name on the Old Postal Building that his company is currently refitting into a hotel in Washington, DC.

Mr. Trump has a long history of making incendiary and offensive comments aimed at demeaning immigrants, women, and people of color. Allowing him to emblazon his name just blocks from the White House would be a tacit endorsement of his beliefs and further this controversial figure's efforts at self promotion.

Washington, DC's prominent buildings like the Old Postal Building are important to how the nation is viewed by those of us who call America home and to the world. They are also owned by taxpayers like me.

Please do not soil our nation's image by enabling the promotion of a man who takes such strides to divide our country and demean our diversity.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
