Westminster: stop evicting poor families from their own city

Westminster Council has unveiled plans to send homeless Westminster residents, including families, up to 75 miles away from the city. Please sign this petition to say NO to social cleansing.

Westminster council has failed to build adequate social housing, and instead the area has seen a sell-off of council stock. Those in need of housing are being offered private rentals instead.

With rental private property prices in London so high, and within Westminster's rental rates soaring, the council's solution is to house families in other towns and cities where the rent is cheaper.

Poor people are being forcibly moved away from their social networks and neighbourhoods because the council decided to sacrifice social housing to save money.

Westminster Council's Labour group leader Adam Hug criticised the "atrocious" failure to build enough social housing, and said that the result is ''social cleansing". As the wealthy line their pockets, the poorest are made to pay the price. A council's job is to care for its residents, not to eject innocent people for the crime of being poor.

Please sign this petition to demand that Westminster Council do NOT move homeless families to other towns and cities. If enough people sign, they will have to recognise that uprooting poor families is unacceptable, and discuss better solutions.

Westminster Council:

The proposals to move homeless people into private rentals up to 75 miles from Westminster in a bid to save money has been described as ''social cleansing''. It is a terrible failure in the duties of the council.

It is not acceptable to save money by ejecting residents from their own city. It is the job of the council to care for all its residents.
