Stop hunting on the graveyard

Liebe Freunde, die Kirchengemeinde Halle, Westfalen, hat auf ihrem groessten Friedhof die Kaninchenjagd ausgerufen. Dies geschieht offenbar alle Jahre wieder und ist fuer dieses Jahr noch fuer den 28. November, 5. Dezember, 12. und 19. Dezember geplant. Fordern wir gemeinsam eine sofortige Abkehr von diesem Wahnsinn und erklaeren der Gemeinde, dass Jagd auf dem Friedhof eine Absurditaet ist, die nicht nur der Menschlichkeit, sondern auch allen elementaren christlichen Lehren zuwider geht. Ob ihr religioes seid oder einfach nur auf Seiten der Unschuldigen steht: Bitte unterzeichnet die Petition! Vielen Dank.

Dear friends,
the parish of Halle, Westfalia, has called the hunt for rabbits on Halle's biggest graveyard. This absurdity happens every year and for this year there are several hunting dates remaining: November 28th, December 5th, 12th and 19th. Let us ask for an immediate end to this madness and explain to the church that hunting on a graveyard is contrary not only to humanity, but also to all basic christian teachings. If you are religious or if you just are on the side of the innocent: Please sign the petition! Thank you.

In jener Stunde traten die Juenger zu Jesus und sprachen: "Wer ist denn der Groesste im Reich
der Himmel?" Und als Jesus ein Kind herbeigerufen hatte, stellte er es in die Mitte und
sprach: "Wahrlich, ich sage euch, wenn ihr nicht umkehrt und werdet wie die Kinder, so
werdet ihr keinesfalls in das Reich der Himmel hineinkommen."
So steht es in Matthaeus 18. Und nun stellen wir uns einmal vor, was ein kleines Kind von sich
aus denkt, wenn es vielleicht auf den Friedhof kommt, um das Grab seiner verstorbenen
Grosseltern zu besuchen- und dann ploetzlich ein kleines Kaninchen aus den Bueschen
hervorkommt.
Wuerde dieses Kind nach den Jaegern rufen? Und wuerde Jesus Christus das tun? Hat Jesaja
nicht von seinem kuenftigen Friedensreich gesagt: "Der Wolf wird beim Lamm weilen und der
Leopard beim Boeckchen lagern?" (Jes. 11, 6). Und hat Gott nicht, als er dem Menschen den
Auftrag gab, ueber die Erde und ihre Bewohner zu herrschen, schon im darauffolgenden Vers
gesagt: "Ich habe euch alles samentragende Kraut gegeben, das auf der Flaeche der ganzen
Erde ist, und jeden Baum, an dem samentragende Baumfrucht ist: Es soll euch zur Nahrung
dienen"? (1. Mose 1, 26-30).
"Ich bin der gute Hirte; der gute Hirte laesst sein Leben fuer die Schafe." heisst es in Matthaeus
10,11. Auch wenn dies ein Gleichnis ist, so muss Jesus das, worauf er sich bezieht, doch auch
ernst meinen. Und obwohl seit diesen Worten nun schon ueber 2000 Jahre vergangen sind,
sieht man in unserer Gesellschaft, wo auch immer man hinsieht, nur das Gegenteil. Tiere
werden gequaelt, meist in verschlossenen Raeumen oder abseits der Oeffentlichkeit. Und die,
welche es vielleicht verhindern koennten, sehen weg oder delegieren die Verantwortung fuer
das Misshandeln von Gottes Geschoepfen an andere.
Es waere schoen, wenn wenigstens diejenigen, die in Jesu Leben und Worten ein
nachahmenswertes Vorbild sehen, die seine Nachfolge nach aussen hin fuer die anderen
Menschen repraesentieren, sich auch ein wenig um seine Geschoepfe kuemmern wuerden. Und
einmal darueber nachdenken, welches Bild, mit den Augen des Schoepfers betrachtet,
wunderbarer ist: Abgeschnittene, auf Graebern verwelkende Blumen oder kleine und friedliche
Tiere, die auf dem Gottesacker ihrer gottgewollten Bestimmung nachgehen.
Ich glaube nicht, dass eine voellig anthropozentrische Bibelauslegung im Sinne Gottes ist.
Ebenso glaube ich nicht, dass mit dem Wort "Herrschaft" in 1. Mose 1, Vers 29 etwa
"Tyrannei"gemeint ist. Eine Entweihung des Friedhofs durch das Toeten hilfloser und
unschuldiger Geschoepfe ist aus unserer Sicht nicht mit den Grundprinzipien christlichen
Handelns zu vereinbaren.

Wir, die Unterzeichnenden, moechten Sie mit dieser Petition darum bitten, den Jagdauftrag fuer
Friedhof III umgehend zurueckzuziehen.

"At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom
of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and
said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall
not enter into the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18, 1-3).
Now let's imagine a child who wants to visit the graves of its deceased grandparents.
What might this child think when suddenly a cheeky rabbit approaches it from behind the
bushes? Would it call for hunters? Would Jesus have done that? Did not Isaiah say about his
future kingdom of peace: "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie
down with the kid" (Isaiha 11, 6)? And did not God, as he gave man the mission of reigning
over the earth and its inhabitants, say: "I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is
upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed;
to you it shall be for meat" (Genesis, 26-30)?
"I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep" (John 10,
11). Though this is a parable, Jesus surely must have meant what he said. Nonetheless -
although more than 2000 years have passed since these words were spoken! - one observes
that the opposite way of thinking still prevails in today's society. Animals are being tortured
- albeit mostly behind closed doors and thus far away from the public eye. However, those
who might be able to prevent such disastrous maltreatment of God's creatures to take place,
turn a blind eye towards it or otherwise delegate the responsibility for it towards others.
It would be wonderful if at least those who regard Jesus' teachings as a guidance in
life and who represent his words for others would care for his creatures. In fact, which
image is more wonderful (as seen through the Creator's eyes): The somewhat hypocritical
one of tidy, yet artificial graves, or the natural one of satisfied and peaceful creatures,
fulfilling their God-given purpose?
I don't think that God would approve of a purely anthropocentric reading of the
Bible. Furthermore, I don't think that 'dominion' is meant to be read as 'tyranny'. In my
view, profaning the graveyard by killing helpless and innocent creatures is by no means
compatible with the principles of Christianity and thus of human agency.

With this petition, we, the undersigned, would like for you to withdraw the hunting-order for
Friedhof III immediately.
