University of Southampton Against Whale/Dolphin Slaughter in Japan
QuackSoc Animal Rights Society here at the University of Southampton invites you to sign our petition urging the British Government and Japanese Ambassador to take action and make their voices heard about the illegal slaughter of dolphins and whales in Japan.
To increase awareness of the topic the documentary film The Cove is to be shown on 21/10/10, open to all students to attend.
Some shocking facts:*More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are brutally killed each year*Dolphin meat containing toxic levels of Mercury are being labelled as whale meat and being sold to the Japanese people. Some of the dolphin meat is given to children as part of their school lunch program.*23,000 permits are issued each year by the Japan Fisheries Agency to kill dolphins, porpoises, and other small whales.*Often times, dolphins die during the chase that can last eight hours or more*The majority of people in Japan have no knowledge about the annual dolphin blood bath.

After the recent showing of The Cove, here at the University of Southampton, we as students were shocked to see the mass illegal slaughter of Dolphins and Whales in Japan. It was also shocking to learn of the selling of Dolphin meat to the people of Japan when it contains toxic amounts of mercury, posing a severe threat to public health.
We ask that you urge the Japanese government to revoke permits that allow Japan's Fisheries Agency to continue this immoral, dangerous and illegal practice.
We also urge that British influence is excised over the International Whaling Commission to include the proper management of dolphins and porpoises and a comprehensive plan is put in action to stop the slaughter of dolphins in Japan.
