demand more urban farming in our communities!

As you know our global network food system has some serious sustainability issues! First transporting food from farm to fork! The average food crop can travel well over 1000 miles to go from farm to fork! To do this we depend on a world wide network! One which is much more vulnerable then you might like to think! There are over a million things that can shut it down leaving millions even billions of people to starve! Fuel for the trucks could run out; grinding shipments to a halt! A EMP could fry the circuits of not just the trucks; but all the electronic devices our food grid depends on to get our food from farm to fork safe and sound! And an EMP can come from any where! Solar flares can create an EMP that would knockout our power grid across the globe! With 5th graders building EMP bombs as school science projects; all that needs to happen is for Timmy who lives in that apartment over the store to have a little oopsy with his school project and boom! The supermarket is out of order for a couple of years! And food shipments to our little town are shut down till then! Or dare I say it! ISIS gets a larger EMP bomb and detonates it! If we don't have a secure local off grid food source; we are screwed! Aside from the issue of national security! There is also the issue of real estate! With human population reaching 8 billion! We are farming close to all the viable rural farm land to it's maximum capacity! And because the rural farming model requires so much open land for growing food! Humans are pushed more in to greater urban density! Which is detrimental to our over all health and well being! We are just not built for this kind of urban life! The social interaction alone is often too much for the human brain to handle when you have over 400.000 people per square mile! Then there is supplying utilities to all those homes! Our grid just isn't built for that kind of load! Making regular black outs yet another threat to our global food network! But I digress! The bigger problem with our rural farming model is taking up all that land for farming squeezes out needed habitat for local wildlife! It also takes a lot of water to irrigate those crops! When water gets scarce; crops fail! These open field farms are also vulnerable to insects! The urban farming model on the other hand uses sky scraper green house architecture to stack acres of farm land vertically; using less land! The glass walls of the green house keeping out bugs; preventing crop infestations and the resulting crop failures with out need for pesticides! Well the indoor irrigation system recirculates the water cutting water use by over 60%! Urban farming models also allow for farming in the home and underground by use of grow lamps! Opening up that much more possible land for farming! The point is we need more urban farming! To be prepared for a possible doomsday scenario! And just in general to be more sustainable!
