ANNUL THE OPEN CONTAINER LAWS IN HARRISONBURG

I am 22 year old student at James Madison University. Recently I had left a party, solo cup in hand and was walking on the sidewalk off of Devon Lane. As I was going up the hill, some cops saw me carrying this cup and got out their cars and approached me. They acted like I was a criminal with a gun. One kept a hand on me in case I tried to run, like having a beer in my hand while being the legal age, was doing something wrong in itself. The open container law is only used to increase revenue for the city. I will not play along. I believe in the consent of the governed, and I don't believe we should consent to pay these fines just because we are carrying a red cup with beer on the sidewalk. I am causing no one any harm, I am not littering, I am not intoxicated and causing a disturbance. I am simply WALKING. People tell me laws are laws. But my parents can remember times that they couldn't walk into the front of the dairy queen, or go to white peoples bathrooms or drink from the water fountains. Those are immoral laws! You shouldn't have to follow laws that make no sense and I refuse to do so. Why do I have to pay you money because I drank alcohol! I will not, and I will fight for as long as I live. Sign this petition so our voice will be heard, and maybe we can see the true meaning of democracy!
