George Washington stayed at the home of Elijah and Ann Miller during the Battle of White Plains in the Revolutionary War and used it as his headquarters. IT IS AN OUTRAGE, that this historic home is now in Horrible Disrepair, due to the neglect of Westchester County Executive, Rob Astorino. Yes, the guilt can be placed squarely in his lap. He personally vetoed a $1.2 million bond issue passed by the county Legislature to save and restore the house.
The current condition of this designated National Historic Landmark, is a DISGRACE, and if it is not dealt with soon the site may be condemned and torn down. It has been hanging on by a thread for many years, almost forgotten in an industrial area opposite a cement plant: roof near collapse, ceiling beginning to crack, porch sagging, barely open to the public and more. Astorino is quoted as saying at the time of his veto “it is neither an essential service nor a priority for the county”. I would retort back to him that, you cannot put the history of America on the lowest rung of importance for a community. Our history is important. It is essential and it is relevant. Once this historic site is gone, it is gone forever. And with it goes our memory of the brave men who fought and died there to give this land the freedom we all enjoy.
