The Indonesian military has made it a policy to probe female recruits' genitals, supposedly in order to verify their moral character. It's uncomfortable, it's degrading, and it's not an accurate scientific way to determine whether or not a woman is a virgin in the place.
Although General Moeldoko has defended the practice, we call on him and other military officials to put an end to these tests, which human rights organizations say are a violation.
Last year, a popular Care2 petition played a part in successfully stopping Indonesian high schools from inflicting these same embarrassing and unnecessary tests on teenage girls. With our attention and support, perhaps we can put a stop to this again.
