Prevent Accidental Gun Deaths - Require Gun Liability Insurance

  • by: Sue Lee

Just as a homeowner has house insurance and drivers are required to have auto insurance in the event of accidents, damages, injuries or deaths, gun owners should also be responsible for damage and injuries caused by their firearms.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney recently re-introduced The Firearm Risk Protection Act of 2015, which would require gun owners to carry liability insurance for their firearms. Under the legislation, law enforcement members would be exempt from this proposed insurance.

Such a requirement could help reduce the number of accidental deaths. In fact, states where gun owners are held responsible for proper firearms storage saw accidental child firearms deaths decline by nearly a quarter. According to Congresswoman Maloney:

“An insurance requirement would allow the free market to encourage cautious behavior and help save lives. Adequate liability coverage would also ensure that the victims of gun violence are fairly compensated when crimes or accidents occur.”

Dear Decision Maker,

I strongly urge you to do everything you can to ensure passage of Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney's Firearm Risk Protection Act of 2015 (HR 2546).

Just as car and home owners are required to carry insurance, gun owners need to also carry liability insurance. Doing so could lessen damage, injuries, and deaths caused by firearms. In fact, states where gun owners are held responsible for damage and injuries caused by improperly stored firearms saw a 23 percent reduction in accidental child gun deaths.
