Stop the killing at Caddo Parish

Target:

Sponsored by:
Caddo Parish Animal control in Shreveport LA use to work towards getting as many animals as possible adopted out.  Annette Lewis was key to turning the shelter's focus around.  Together with her emphasis on adoptions and her working with local rescue groups a LOT of animals were saved.

Since taking over as the Director of Caddo Parish Animal Control, Matthew Pepper has changed the direction of the shelter into becoming a virtual slaughter house.

The following information was provided as of 05/17/08:

Between 5-5-08, and 5-16-08, they euthanized over 300 animals. On 5-13-08 they euthanized 78 animals that one day. They use no sedation, and frequently not the right dosage, as animals are found alive in the freezer, quite often. The same person does the euthanasia.

There was a cat and her kittens that were euthanized right in their kennel, and just left there, and are still there!

There is a small "Benji" type puppy that rescue was told would be put down because of parvo. When it was pointed out that there is no parvo there, and the puppy is not sick, they said that the puppy was not friendly, and could not be adopted.

There is a mama mixed breed dog (approx 30 lbs) and her 5 week old puppy who are under orders to be put down, for no apparent reason.

There is a Pit puppy there under orders to be killed because it is a Pit.

The order is in from the shelter director, that no more dogs will be treated at the vet. If a dog gets sick, it gets euthanized.

And it does not appear that there is going to be any corrections to these actions in the near future.

They recently interviewed for a new rescue/adoption coordinator. A local rescuer there who is very familiar with all of the workings of the shelter and was trained on a volunteer basis by Annette Lewis to be prepared to accept this job if it was offered was one of the people who was interviewed.

She was denied the position solely because of her previous role in trying to get the shelter on a good track, and was told that they were afraid that if she saw something she didn't like, she would engage in activities of this type again!

We are asking the Parish Administrator, Woody Wilson and the President of the LA Animal Control Association to investigate what is happening at Caddo Parish and to instill policies and procedures that will once again make Caddo Parish a monument of compassion for animals and their welfare.

On their website which can be found at www.caddopets.com it states, on the front page, that "Our goal at the shelter is to give each animal the love and affection that it may have been denied."  It is time to make these words mean something again.  Caddo Parish needs to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

We, the undersigned, do respectfully ask that the changes in policy at Caddo Parish Animal Control be evaluated and policies be put in place to insure that healthy companion animals are given a chance to be adopted instead of being euthanized.

Until recently, before the new director, Matthew Pepper took charge of things, there was a concerted effort to get the animals adopted out and to work with local rescues to assist in that task.  At a time when more and more shelters are moving towards establishing a "no-kill" philosophy, to revert to being a very high kill shelter is a "black eye" at best for the whole of Caddo Parish and gives the impression of a lack of compassion as well as the appearance of being behind the times in terms of animal control.  While we understand that it is not always possible to adopt out every dog and/or cat that comes in to your shelter, we believe it is unconscionable to kill these innocent victims while making no attempts to find homes for them.

Please understand this is not just a local issue.  If you read the signatures found here, you will see that the eyes of not just the nation, but of other countries as well are watching to see how you respond to this situation.  We urge you to act quickly on this matter to correct the situation that is at hand and to re-establish the feelings that Caddo Parish is a place of compassionate citizens,  a place we would want to visit, rather than to avoid.

We appreciate your time and efforts in considering and addressing our concerns.

How can you, as director of an animal shelter, replace compassion with expediecncy? Shame on you!

Why kill innocent loving animals who just need a home and love? Why don't we clean out our prisons, use the money we spend on these worthless criminals, and invest that money into a living being who truly deserves it. How can someone look at a sweet, innocent, trusting animal in the eyes and kill it for no reason? How heartless. What a twisted world we live in.

Gandhi said, "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Obviously, we are less than a third world on this issue, with no vision for a better future. This holds true for every aspect of how this state is managed, very poorly, without planning to attract more business to improve the economy.

The killing needs to be stopped. Many other states have adopted better solutions to massive euthanasia. Why is Louisiana always last to improve the way state agencies are managed? No wonder businesses relocate to other states that offer a better quality of life for all.

For the one's that are in favor of this mass killing of animals. I ask you, are you pro-choice. How would you like it if they did this to your children?

More awareness in the comunity needs to be done to foster and neuter the animals in the parish to prevent the mass being brought to the shelter.

What is it with all these backward Louisiana shelters that love to kill? People have to demand change for the better and show the parish they are not standing for this. We seem to have the same killing people in our parish too. Demand justice for the animals of Tangipahoa http://www.thepetitionsite.com/60/justice-for-animals-of-tangipahoa http://snipurl.com/3d5il

It is 2008 and we should now be past killing all the animals that end up in our shelters. Stop the killing! On Monday, August 4, approximately 170 dogs and cats were euthanized at the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter. It is time for all this killing to stop.

This is cruel, inhumane & unecessary! It's heart-wrenching! It's WRONG!!

There is NO REASON to kill any of these animals! It's not a prison or concentration camp! It's an animal SHELTER!! It's suppose to help SAVE LIVES!! We don't even do that to murderers in our prison system. I would rather pay to take care of an animal that has unconditional love than someone who murdered another person! WHat is wrong with this picture??

it is inhumane, unacceptable, and sick. My dogs, both coming from the shelter, are the most wonderful companions in the world. I am sick to my stomach just thinking if they didn't have even a shot at life.

because it is wrong. dogs are the most lovable creatures and best companions people could ask for. just because they do not talk, does not mean they do not have rights

I feel that the mass killing of healthy companion animals is a travesty that should be stopped as soon as possible. It is clearly an inhumane act perpetuated against creatures whose lives were dedicated to improving the quality of life of their former human companions.

This should be stopped because the extreme cruelty of these mass killings speaks to the most inhuman aspect of our society. Every effort should be made to place these animals in homes as a reward for their years of service.

Other than to save a few dollars, it is inconceivable that an animal shelter would kill healthy dogs and cats without making an honest effort to have them adopted. Not only are these animals' lives saved by adoptions, but the lives of those people who adopted are greatly enriched.

There are many alternatives to killing healthy animals. Here in Manhattan, one rarely sees stray animals. This is because the public has been educated about the importance of spay-neuter programs, landlords have been made to understand why they should not ban pets from their buidings, among other things.

This is very unnecessary. Caddo needs to follow the lead of other succesfull shelters and start vying for state money to educate the public to spay and neuter their pets

Every life is precious

If they can be adopted out, they should be. The killing of innocent animals without sedation, or with inadequate dosages, is beyond cruel.

I am appalled. My husband rescued a puppy from an abusive situation. The puppy was taken to Caddo Animal Control. We called daily interested in adopting the puppy and were told we had to wait one week to allow owners to claim her. After one week I emailed and received a response saying they were preparing her for adoption and to come by. The next day my husband went to get her and she had been euthanized for no apparent reason.

I am not an animal rights activist. I understand that there are times and circumstances when animals may need to be euthanized. But what possible explanation is there for the killing of a perfectly healthy puppy whose card is flagged with a name and phone number for adoption.

Please do not kill healthy animals - especially the way you are doing it. Obviously you are not trained - leaving live animals in the freezer. When it is your time to go to heaven - I know you will be judged accordingly.

Please release your animals to the local organizations that care and will adopt out your animals.
