Ask Taiwanese Authorities to Stop Rabies Experiments on Dogs‏

  • by: Kelly Rogers
  • recipient: Taiwan's Council of Agriculture

HERE IS THE FULL PLEA I RECEIVED TODAY:

Dear Supporter,

Please join PETA in asking Taiwanese authorities to stop cruel and unnecessary experiments on dogs before they begin.

Taiwan's Council of Agriculture is planning to inject rats and beagles with a strain of the rabies virus that was recently isolated from ferret-badgers, even though experts agree that these tests are unnecessary. These experiments are inhumane and will not help protect the health of humans, dogs, or other animals. If the animals are infected with rabies, they may suffer from paralysis, anxiety, confusion, and painful muscle spasms and eventually die.

PETA along with other animal-protection organizations and concerned individuals around the worldis calling on the council to halt these unnecessary and cruel experiments immediately. Please join us! Take the time to call or send a short message to the Taiwanese embassy in your country. You can find contact details here.

To find the Embassy for your country.  In some cases there are two or three embassies so becareful which embassy you are writing to.

Here are some talking points that you might want to mention in your call or letter:

  • I am calling/writing to ask that Taiwan's Council of Agriculture immediately halt plans to expose beagles to the rabies virus.
  • Experts have already stated that dogs can become infected with the new rabies strain.
  • Non-animal laboratory tests can determine how effective current rabies vaccines are against this particular virus strain.
  • Animal-population and public-health experts report that the most effective tools to curb the threat of rabies and its transmission to humans are laws mandating that guardians have their animals sterilized in order to prevent unwanted births, humane euthanasia for rabies-infected and unwanted animals, and humane-education programs in schools that teach children how to prevent the spread of rabies.

Thank you in advance for your actions for animals!

Sincerely,
The PETA Asia Team
