USFWS – Ensure Protection of the Titicaca Water Frog at the CITES Meeting

With the onset of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) meeting this September in Johannesburg, South Africa, the concern is the protection of various species of wildlife. Hundreds of species of wildlife are factually being traded into extinction.  It is highly commendable that the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Services did in co-sponsore proposals to list African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) and devil rays (Mobula spp.) under Appendix I and II of the CITES. You can read more on the issue and endangered Titicaca water frog at http://www.arkive.org/titicaca-water-frog/telmatobius-culeus/  & https://secure.defenders.org/site/Advocacy;jsessionid=E5768E0C58B5362504EE2E2647DF87D6.app224a?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3091&s_src=3WDE1610A1XX1&s_subsrc=071116_ADVACTFF_cites_nondonor&autologin=true&utm_campaign=CITESA2D&utm_medium=email&utm_source=nondonors

The Titicaca water frog is the largest of aquatic frogs worldwide.  It has large eyes, a flattened head and round snout.  The frog has variations in color from black, to olive and dark green.  The uniqueness of the frog is its extremely loose skin hanging down that makes it not the most attractive of beings, but useful for the environment none-the-less. The predominant habitat is in Lake Titicaca along the Peruvian and Bolivian landscape.  The biggest threat to the large Titicaca water frog is the collection of the animals by humans for consumption.  Habitat loss and pollutants in Lake Titicaca are other grave issues for their decline in numbers.

I strongly urge USFWS to take a stern stand and help promote the listing of the Titicaca water frog at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in September and ensure that they are given the protection they need to keep them from the brink of extinction.  You can help me with this effort by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and ideas for the protection of wildlife like these large frogs.

U. S. Fish & Wildlife Services – Thank you so much for taking a stand co-sponsoring proposals to list African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) and devil rays (Mobula spp.) under Appendix I and II of the CITES.  The protection of wildlife under the CITES is crucial for their survival and I strongly urge you to take a stern stand and help promote the listing of the Titicaca water frog at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in September and ensure that they are given the protection they need to keep them from the brink of extinction. The inclusion of these frogs under Appendix I and II is crucial to their survival and permanent existence.
