Three industrial LNG ports are proposed in the ocean off New Jersey and New York.

Petition to Save Our Ocean from Attacks by Big Oil

Target:
New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine & New York Governor David Patterson
Sponsored by:

Three industrial port facilities for liquefied natural gas (LNG), a polluting, climate-changing, expensive, foreign fossil fuel, are proposed just off the south shore of Long Island, New York, and the New Jersey shore, threatening our beaches, marine life, and economy--in short, our way of life.  Alternatives exist and we do not need this foreign fossil fuel.

1) Atlantic Sea Island Group: ironically called, "Safe Harbor Energy," this insane proposal by a private investor firm seeks to build a massive manmade island for a LNG facility by dumping millions upon millions of tons of unknown material in the open ocean.

2) ExxonMobil: one of the most notorious oil polluters is out to use our ocean as a lab rat with "BlueOcean Energy," a plan to build an experimental massive floating LNG terminal.  A similar project was rejected by NY and CT.  Also, California Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed this type of project due to threats to air quality and marine life.

3) "Liberty Natural Gas" Project: Excalibur Energy (a new conglomerate of Canadian Superior Energy and Global LNG) proposes an LNG importation facility for 15 miles off Asbury Park, NJ.  The source of the LNG is drilling and extracting off Trinidad and Tobago.  Thus supporting this facility would promote offshore drilling in a country that already has environmental problems with oil pollution on beaches.

NY Secretary of State and Connecticut's Governor and Attorney General rejected the LNG project from Long Island Sound, and instead said to dump it off the south shore of Long Island, NY, and the NJ shore.

We, the undersigned, oppose fossil fuel facilities in the ocean off New Jersey and New York, and support the Clean Ocean Zone, which would prohibit polluting and destructive activities and facilities, such as "Safe Harbor Energy," "BlueOcean Energy," and "Liberty Natural Gas."

Our state's cancer rate is one of the highest in the country. We don't need any more air or water pollution increasing our chances of contracting disease.

New York State stands out in this country. It needs to be aware of the influence it has, and the example set by it. If we all decide not to care about the ecosystems in our very own state how can we expect our nation to decrease its pollution?

we have already prostituted our state in so many ways it's demeaning: the garden state arts center / the brendan byrne arena. how many ways are we going to sell or lease our assets and the various things that make new jersey what it is? how sick, or how many cancer clusters do we need before we put the health and well being of our citizens first?

We are having a fight here about LNG facilities on the Columbia River. Though an offshore facility solves some of the issues we face here, the scale of these projects just doesn't make sense anywhere. And offshore facilities are much harder to maintain, and more expensive. For all the usual reasons, I oppose this development, and implore the governors of New York and New Jersey to veto this proposal. If only we had this power here!!

I believe that petroleum exploration should be pursued and developed in offshore areas that have been known to produce already and are already accustomed to development in that particular offshore area, such as in the Gulf of Mexico. I wish to protect the environment and to take all possible measures to take care when exploring it for resources. I also want homes that are on oil systems to have heat in the winter for newborn babies until we do finally switch energy sources as everyone talks about. I do not believe that we should branch out and develop in waters that have been untouched thus far, and further subject different areas of the ocean to the stress production has on the environment. Also, in the summer, beach and waters in Long Island and their preservation attracts more tourism, boating, fishing, surfing, swimming and waterfront business. To keep this economy growing, we cannot pose a visual impairment to tourists, or environmental inconveniences due to possible accidents that may (and have been known to occur) as a result of offshore drilling. Also, it is possible that waterfront property values can go down on the South Shore, as opposed to the North Shore, where boaters on the South Shore of Long Island may be more likely to encounter rig activity and by-products during their travels. It is in Long Island's best interest overall to preserve their current assets which is their beautiful waters, develop their waterfront economies and save the drilling for areas in the Southern US that are known to be more productive already. The best place to find oil, is where it has already been found.

Once again, it's big business taking advantage of a money making situation without consideration of the ramifications. We've only got one world here folks! Snap out of it, bury your greed in some other corrupt project that won't harm the environment and then we can boycott that too!

I oppose this on so many levels that it is difficult to count. To begin with, I find it amusing that NJ is again the proposed dumping ground for NY while we maintain a longer coastline and we rely upon commercial fishing and summer vacation revenues. Additionally,Exelon is currently closing their American gasoline stations because they aren't profitable. Should we sacrifice our coastline for a company who cares nothing for the American people? I am not even addressing the potential environmental catastrophes which could occurr and the impact upon the sea life which is already in distress.

I surf long island all year long and oppose the idea of ruining our 1 natural reef off of our shores to put in a LNG facility.

Let's be wise and not spend money unnecessarily even if we have it to spend. There will come a time when we wish we had not done things such as destroying marine life just to build an LNG offshore center. Build a fire in your fire place and heat your home from wood in your back yard! Turn off lights and conserve energy rather than use use use! Remember what we all learned in kindergarten! "Woodsy Owl says, "Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute". How sad a barren ocean floor is! Let's begin by making the right decision on this issue. NO LNG! NO LNG! The USA has plenty of natural gas, wind power and solar power to utilise. BUY American! Thanks Pia Lord

The world does not belong to us, we are a part of it. Humans need to stop thinking they can do whatever they want with whatever the earth gives them. This is destroying the planet, and potentially the human race.

What about opposing polution of any kind is difficult to understand? Our planet has been in existence for millions of years and in the relative "blink of an eye" we are destroying it without any care to the impact we are having on this glorious world of ours. Actually, it's not ours, it doesn't belong to us, we are only visitors and very rude and discourteous ones at that. We should be ashamed of ourselves. Our creator, whoever that may be, must be very disappointed!!

New Jersey has already been the recipient of too many polluting chemicals in our air and water causing numerous health problems. As a nurse and mother I strongly oppose something that will cause further pollution and a threat to the health of our citizens.

The tremendous dangers this facility would create to our enviornment and our economy are extremely unsettling. As a NJ taxpayer, I resepectly request that you do the right thing and deny permission to the building any LNG facility in our local oceans.

It is very difficult to maintain clean air and water quality in NJ....Do not allow big polluters to destroy life in the sea. Please do whatever you can to keep NJ waters clean..our future generations deserve clean water and the sea creatures deserve to live pollution-free.

Clean Oceans are an important aspect to our everyday life and an important part of our evolution as a society. We need to do everything in our power to clean up the world we live in to provide a safe place for future growth of our environment from the smallest creature and plant to the largest, if we don't, civilization as a whole will cease to exist.
