Two industrial LNG ports are proposed in the ocean off New Jersey and New York.

Petition to Save Our Ocean from Attacks by Big Oil

Target:
New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine & New York Governor David Patterson
Sponsored by:

Two industrial port facilities for liquefied natural gas (LNG), a polluting, climate-changing, expensive, foreign fossil fuel, are proposed just off the south shore of Long Island, New York, and the New Jersey shore, threatening our beaches, marine life, and economy--in short, our way of life.  Alternatives exist and we do not need this foreign fossil fuel.

1) Atlantic Sea Island Group: ironically called, "Safe Harbor Energy," this insane proposal by a private investor firm seeks to build a massive manmade island for a LNG facility by dumping millions upon millions of tons of unknown material in the open ocean.

2) ExxonMobil: one of the most notorious oil polluters is out to use our ocean as a lab rat with "BlueOcean Energy," a plan to build an experimental massive floating LNG terminal.  A similar project was rejected by NY and CT.  Also, California Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed this type of project due to threats to air quality and marine life.

NY Secretary of State and Connecticut's Governor and Attorney General rejected the LNG project from Long Island Sound, and instead said to dump it off the south shore of Long Island, NY, and the NJ shore.

We, the undersigned, oppose fossil fuel facilities in the ocean off New Jersey and New York, and support the Clean Ocean Zone, which would prohibit polluting and destructive activities and facilities, such as "Safe Harbor Energy" and "BlueOcean Energy."

The building of artificial islands has traditionally failed and will in the end allot to wasted resources. There is no reason why an artificial island is necessary for such a procedure, nor is such a procedure environmentally sound.

Please don't ruin our special NJ coastline with this monstrous, polluting facility. I am a former Ocean County resident who now lives in California. We have fought LNG here for several years. Don't let NJ become dependent on imported energy from overseas. We have better energy alternatives here in the United States.

What would Brazil do? After reading the article in the press I immediately thought the Industial idealizations are still alive. If you build it they will come. What are the alternatives? You could also call the island Someday Island, someday we will get it right. Bless you!

It's typical of Big Biz to ignore the impact that their actions cause as long as they see profit. However, this is just a bad and horrible idea to drill for oil off the coast for so many reasons i just don't have enough time to write all of them. Besides if you have half a brain and a 1/16 of a good heart you would agree.

"... by a private investor firm..." INVESTOR!!!?? How about investing in the future. The future health of this planet and of our children. Try thinking about them for a change instead of how much change you have in your bank account!!!!!

Stop polluting the Earth! While some people concerning about losing they jobs,we will soon enter the era were will be not only jobs left but no food and water left.God gave us rescourses not to destroy it, insted use it wise

We have made such important strides towards reducing contaminants going into our oceans. Let's work towards alternative energy distribution.

I absolutley don't oppose off shore drilling. Thousands of poeple off are losing there jobs because of anti kooks that are running around.WE need to use the rescources that God gave us. Bob O'Connor

I am very concerned about the long term effects this will have on the Jersey shore environment , especially the fishing and quality of the recational waters surrounding LBI,NJ.

Hello, I think that we should be more aware of the causes of polluting. Our planet has already begun to see changes all over the world. For instance, Hurrican Katrina, tornadoes, droughts, and floods throughout the world. These are just wake up calls for us to stop what we are doing and to have alternative methods. You shouldn't regardless dump pollution into the ocean because think about all of the species that live there . You are destroying them and ultimately we are destroying ourselfs. If you want to have a clean ocean then I recommend you think again before you impose your actions. --Christa

I have degrees in both Biology and Chemistry;therefore, I can accurrately state that drilling for oil off our our coastline will have an immediate impact on the ecology of our shores. Furthermore, as a chemist and scientist I know that there are much cleaner alternative fuel possibilities that will not impact future generations negatively. Please revisit the potential consequenses of your actions.

I oppose the industrial port facilities because as an ocean advocate, I wish to minimize the polluting, climate-changing effects we have on the environment. I live at the Jersey Shore and feel this would have a profound impact on my personal life. Through the rejection of various other states I feel a precedent has been set and NJ should follow.

A project like this destroys critical coastal habitat, increases greenhouse emissions and unnecessarily increases our dependence on foriegn fossil fuels--

I am against off shore oil drilling because I believe it is hazardous to the world environment. If there was an oil spill off the coast of Florida the North Atlantic Current could carry the spill all the way to Northern Europe leaving a trail of death & destruction. There are better ways to meet our needs as consumers. Please do not allow drilling in our oceans!

I grew up at the ocean near Ocean City / Margate / Longport New Jersey. It was my way of life and the only thing I knew. It is the essence of nature and one of the greatest beauties of this planet. Clean water is so scarce, it is immoral and should be illegal to contribute to the poisoning of the ocean. Anything else is inhumane and sick!!!

Gas/oil/carbon/pollution-creating energy is destroying the planet, ruining our economy and funding terrorists. Our future lies in clean energy. Give incentives to wind, solar and thermal energy.

Because maintaining the efficacy of our natural habitats has never been more important in the over-populated state of New Jersey. Where will our children go to the beach, if we don't step up now??

This oil thing is a complicated matter. The only thing we can do is keep petroleum out of the atmosphere and encourage alternative energy sources. Immediate profit benefits seem to always override the reality of long term (and many short term) environmental effects- ExxonMobil and many other oil companies are notorious for this. Limit your mileage in the car, carpool and keep this petition going.

The safety and harmful environmental impacts are too high a cost to pay for another source of natural gas. Needs to look to alternative, renewable energy sources and stop its reliance on imported petroleum and other polluting fuels.
