Connecticut: Let Students Opt Out of Dissection!

Connecticut lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow students with conscientious objections to opt out of participating in, or observing, classroom dissections.

Students who do not want to participate should be afforded the opportunity to choose an alternative and be given the tools they need to learn and make humane decisions that show compassion and respect for life, instead of being taught apathy and led to believe that treating animals as disposable objects is the norm.

Studies have shown that students can learn just as well using humane alternatives, which are widely available and are supported by the Science Teachers Association and the National Association of Biology Teachers.

Students shouldn't have to choose between their values and their grades.

Please sign the petition asking Connecticut's Senate to pass An Act Concerning Dissection Choice.

As someone who is concerned about the use of animals in education, I am writing to urge you to support An Act Concerning Dissection Choice.

Students who do not want to participate in dissection should be afforded the opportunity to choose an alternative and be given the tools they need to learn and make humane decisions that show compassion and respect for life, instead of being taught apathy and led to believe that treating animals as disposable objects is the norm.

Studies have shown that students can learn just as well using humane alternatives, which are widely available and are supported by the Science Teachers Association and the National Association of Biology Teachers.

Alternatives to dissection, including simulated models, plastic models and computer programs, are readily available and are more cost-effective than using animal specimens.

Additionally, over 90 percent of medical schools have eliminated animal-based teaching methods, proving that traditional dissection in grades K-12 is outdated and unnecessary, according to the New England Anti-Vivisection Society.

I sincerely hope you will pass this important piece of legislation and give students the right to opt out of dissection. Students shouldn't have to choose between their values and their grades.
