Please sign and share this petition as we ask the city of Indianapolis to support the city's agency known as the Indianapolis Animal Care & Control facility. Although they try to survive on the donations of caring individuals, a recent outbreak of a deadly feline viral outbreak proved to fail the animals predominantly due to lack of funds.

All shelters and animal care facilities should have their own veterinarian on staff which could have save many of these animals but the Indianapolis Animal Care & Control Agency do not have a staffed veterinarian or medical staff because of the lack of funds. The Indianapolis Animal Care and Control Agency is a well-respected facility when it comes to the health and well-being of needy animals. They operate one of the largest animal shelters in the state. However, they are unequipped and underfunded to respond to medical issues and task force of animal welfare experts, being that they are so desperately understaffed.

A severe emergency did hit the shelter; a deadly viral outbreak that killed around 25 cats and nearly led to a mass euthanasia of the shelter's 200 felines. The agency has pleaded for an increase in funding, especially from the city. According to reports, the city has relied extensively on charity to perform even the most basic responsibilities of animal care at this agency rather than allowing some of the city's funding as part of their budget. Animal Care and Control has funding for only one veterinarian position and no funding for veterinarian techs, and the vet position has been vacant since March. Then there's the worker hours needed to process new intakes, clean cages and feed the animals on a daily basis. To adequately serve the number of animals they have, the report says staffing at the shelter needs to double, from 23 to 47 full-time employees.

Volunteers do their best to pick up the slack but sufficient enough to meet the needs of the animals. If the agency was sufficiently funded and staffed, they would have had the capabilities to tend to all these animals and stop so many deaths. Members of the City-County Council and Department of Public Safety - Please ensure further help and funding as part of your city budget for the Indianapolis Animal Care and Control Agency. They recently had to deal with a fatal outbreak of a deadly feline virus that took many lives, lives that could have been saved if they were properly staffed through funding. They needed medical staffing but couldn't provide it to save those needy felines. Fund this crucial and important agency for all its efforts in helping those who seem hopeless; the many needy dogs and cats in your city.
