Tell Brazil to Protect Prisoners from Gang Violence

Brazilian prisoners live in fear because of gang violence that has escalated over the past few decades. Gangs use the prisons to recruit new members, and authorities have left prison control in their hands.

This power imbalance allows violence to escalate, and dozens of prisoners are being killed. Right around New Years, 60 prisoners died in the state of Amazonas, reportedly as a result of gang violence. In October 2016, 22 were killed in Roraima, Rondônia, and Acre prisons.

The Brazilian Government must take immediate action to return prison control to the proper authorities, and to end the cycle of violence and intimidation resulting from gang control in prisons. Please sign the petition to urge the Brazilian Government to stand up for detainees' rights and regain control of prisons!

I am concerned about gang violence and gang recruitment that is taking place in Brazilian prisons. It seems that authorities have left prison control in their hands.
