Please sign and share this petition to demand the implementation of a Nationwide Database to Track Convicted Animal Abusers.  Certainly not enough is done to stop animal abuse and convict the abuser.  A poor innocent animal is in peril everyday without even knowing it since they are such natural loving beings.  Something has to be enforced to put an end to the needless, painstaking abuse that many creatures have to endure at the hands of heartless, sick animal abusers.

A database of animal abusers is being implemented by the Animal Legal Defense Fund of Cotati, California similar to that of a sex offender’s registry.  The “Do Not Adopt” registry is a way to alert adoption centers of convicted animal abusers.  They are hoping to spread this registry nationwide to alert more people of offenders.  The Animal Legal Defense Fund states that there are so many different ways to obtain pets with so little that organizations or individuals can do to keep pets out of the wrong hands. One of the members of the animal group stated that "there is no existing mechanism to prevent someone convicted of animal abuse from walking into a shelter or going on Craigslist and getting a new animal.”

Currently the Humane Society is not supporting this registry because it may be shaming to mentally unstable people that may not be a threat to a neighbor’s pet. Although treated through comprehensive mental health counseling, a registry may perhaps isolate them further from society and promote increased distrust of authority figures trying to help them. However, the Animal Legal Defense Fund is working on all these issues.

This registry is in its infancy and needs everyone nationwide to support it and get it up and running!  The purpose thus far is to prevent any abusers from ever owning another animal. Their full names and date of birth will be on the registry. The main concern is animal welfare according to the Animal Care and Control organizations so that animal abuse offenders would streamline their protection efforts.  Once the “do not adopt” registry is put into place, expected by the end of the year, we need to all work together to demand it be nationwide. It needs to be utilized by anyone and everyone in the pet adoption business or looking for a home for a sweet animal.

DO NOT LET A PET GET INTO THE WRONG HANDS, SUBJECTING IT TO NEEDLESS ANIMAL CRUELTY AND ABUSE. Please sign and share this petition to demand the implementation of a Nationwide Database to Track Convicted Animal Abusers.

Nationwide State Legislators, Humane Society of America – Implementing the “Do Not Adopt” registry may not solve all animal abuse but it is definitely a step in the right direction to alert anyone in the pet and animal adoption affairs not to sell or give a pet to a prospective abuser. Please pass laws and regulations that will enforce the use of such a registry that may not totally end animal abuse but at least decrease it drastically by making more and more people aware.  Just as a sex offender’s registry is in place, please do all you can to stop animal abuse beginning with the “Do Not Adopt” registry.
