CANADA: Ban Imports of Dog and Cat Fur!

China has become a top fur importer, and is satisfying demand with domestic dogs and cats. Animal activists believe many of these are stolen pets. The United States, European Union and Australia have laws that ban importing cat and dog fur, and the U.S. tightened their restrictions further by requiring that all fur products be labeled for country and origin of species.

Canada has no restrictions on fur imports, except for endangered species, and 60 percent of their fur comes from China. The Fur Council of Canada claims that they have never found an example of cat or dog fur in the country, but it is nearly impossible to determine the animal of origin once the fur has been treated.

Other western countries have put policies in place to ensure that their garments are free of cat and dog fur. Please convince the Canadian Government to join these countries and enforce trade restrictions on Chinese furs.

We, the undersigned, are concerned with the lack of restrictions on fur imports, particularly those from China. China is satisfying their high fur demand with cats and dogs, many of which animal activists believe are stolen pets.

We believe that the Canadian Government should enact similar policies to ensure that Canadian garments don't contain cat or dog fur. Please consider restricting fur trade with China.
