April 2009 What Counts? Compiled by Jenny Rough posted on Leala Thomas' Blog
9 Billion: Gallons of bottled water consumed in America each year
25: Percent of bottled water that comes from the tap (some estimates are closer to 40 percent)
75: Percent of New York City residents who preferred the taste of tap water to bottled water in a taste test
1 in 5: Number of water bottles recycled in 2006 (the rest went into landfills, incinerators, streams, rivers and oceans)
3.5 Million: Tons of trash (mostly plastic) in the %u201Cfloating landfill%u201D west of San Francisco known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
38: Number of different chemical pollutants found in ten popular brands of bottled water (each brand contained an average of 8 contaminants)
1.5 Million: barrels of oil it takes to make bottled water in the U.S. each year (enough energy to power 250,000 homes)
99.9: Percent of Americans who live in households that have unlimited amounts of fresh, treated water

If the US Government and President Obama are really serious about decreasing our dependency on foreign oil, decreasing our carbon emissions and going green, why does our government purchase and hand out plastic water bottles at congressional sessions and events?
This is hypocrisy that needs to stop now to improve our health and the health of our planet! We need to set an Eco-example for other nations (with clean water sources) to follow.
Please help by signing this petition and then join us at the Environmental Booty Network to make your commitment to self, people and planet.
If you are in a country outside of the US, please sign the petition and then send this information to your elected officials to create a worldwide impact!

We urge you to search for other ways to quench your thirst and the thirst of visiting dignitaries. Perhaps recycled paper cups and pitchers of tap water (purified if necessary) could be a solution.
Thank you for taking time to read our letter. We hope that you will continue to work toward goals such as this which can truly make a difference in our health and the health of our planet.
We signed the "Stop The U.S. Gov't from harming our planet through their use of plastic water bottles!" petition!

Time to stop depleting the water tables of the planet and packaging the product of water in a petroleum derived bottle. Tap or purified water in a stainless steel or glass container is a better solution!

Plastic bottles should be a thing of the past...apart from the pollution,it is obscene to buy water in places where you can get clean water while millions in the world do not have this privilege
