Bring Back the Bilby: Boycott the Bunny

The Greater Bilby has been critically endangered for many years - so much so, that the species was, at one point, extinct in South Australia.

Bilbies are small, burrowing, nocturnal marsupials which live in the arid conditions found in central Australia. Predation by foxes and feral cats mean that the bilby now only occupies 80% of its former territory.

However, it is not only these animals which have threatened the bilby's existence. Sharing many similarities, the rabbit has also impacted on the bilby's existence, as the two species compete for food.

As Easter approaches, I am calling for all Australians to boycott the Easter Bunny in favour of a more modern, Australian tradition: the Easter Bilby. Let's not sacrifice a beautiful native species for an introduced species.

For a number of years, chocolate manufacturers Australian Bush Friends and Pink Lady have produced Easter Bilbies. These manufacturers donate to the Save the Bilby Fund, who are doing amazing work to bring back the bilby. Instead of reaching for the traditional bunny this Easter, buy a chocolate bilby and help these beautiful creatures.

The Lesser Bilby became extinct in the 1950s. Let's not let the Greater Bilby meet the same fate.

Stand with me in boycotting the bunny in order to bring back the bilby.

First of all, a big thankyou to those of you who have signed to save the bilby. You are very much appreciated.

With less than a week until the Easter period begins, we need to make a big push to raise awareness for this beautiful creature. Although we are slowly inching towards the halfway mark, our ultimate goal is 1000 signatures. Please make sure you share this petition on social media so we can reach this goal.
