Tesco has made a promise to sell their seafood that comes only from sustainable sources while protecting the oceans. Greenpeace and TV Chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have been pressuring the company to stick to a higher standard than that of the cheaper brands that endangers other marine life in their fishing methods.

Area supermarkets in the UK have switched its own label tuna to the friendly pole and line caught sources because of the criticism of Chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and his Fish Fight Campaign. Tesco was stocking the Oriental & Pacific brand of tuna that uses the seine method. The Chef has recently stated "Tesco made one of the biggest commitments of all to sell the most sustainable tuna. If they really care about our oceans, then Tesco should take this [Ocean & Pacific] tuna off the shelves today and other supermarkets must follow suit."   Tesco is making every effort to meet higher standards as a caring retailer that provides the highest quality of ethics in the food it sells.

Tesco was singled out for particular criticism by Greenpeace and Fearnley-Whittingstall because of the high-profile promise it made to change its ways two years ago. The company has now pledged to change the tuna used in its own label-ready meals, changing its ways to reflect that commitment, but they have not set a timetable to do so. Some believe that this is hypocrisy, going against their pledge to protect the oceans.

A spokesman for Tesco said: "We moved much faster than many of our competitors to make sure our own-brand tuna is 100% pole and line. We have also promised to use sustainable tuna in other products like pastas, sandwiches and salads." They were insisting that Oriental & Pacific makes a similar commitment to other branded suppliers who are working towards a more sustainable fishing policy. Tesco– Please ensure that you do as you have pledged but in a more timely manner. Guarantee that you provide tuna that is environmentally friendly, protecting the oceans and marine life, making certain that your tuna labels reflect this fact. It is important that, when fishing, that no other ocean life is disturbed or harmed, making for a safer environment. Tesco, you need to provide  your tuna in such a safe manner, reflecting so on your tuna labels.
