Revert Math Curriculum from Inegrated Math to Traditional Math

  • by: Joe M
  • recipient: Moorpark Unified School District
SOLUTION: is to revert back to the traditional math curriculum, Algebra, Geometry and Algebra in 2017-2018 school year OR offer some traditional math curriculum options pathway for families to choose for their student’s math program.
CURRENT PROBLEM: The current integrated math curriculum is not the math curriculum used in the neighboring school districts, such as Simi Valley Unified School District, Conejo Unified School District (Thousand Oaks, Westlake) and Oak Park Unified School District. The integrated math curriculum is not recognized by all colleges and universities across the US. This then requires an additional math test for the college or university to determine the math class for the student. The students in MUSD do not have textbooks with enough practice of the skills and the teachers do not have the same instructional guide as what MUSD provided the teachers with in the traditional math program. Many parents are struggling to help their children with the new curriculum and there are no resources for parents to obtain. Students coming into MUSD or transferring out of MUSD have a more difficult time in transitioning because concepts do not align. In some cases, it resulted in the student to take additional math, repeat of many math concepts because not all the concepts are covered in the traditional math programs. Elementary students have 2 hours of homework nightly and tests weekly to keep up with the curriculum requirements. Parents believe their students are not getting the fundamental math concepts and enough maintenance of the fundamental math concepts. Students that once loved math are losing their interest at an early age as they struggle and they see their parents, who were good at math, struggle to support them. THIS IS NOT COMMON CORE MATH ISSUES, IT IS THE INTEGRATED MATH PROGRAM AND LACK OF MUSD RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND TAXPAYING PARENTS. Several cases families are choosing to leave MUSD because of the math curriculum. Moorpark having 1 High School loses the Moorpark families to other schools due to the math curriculum, which Moorpark being small cannot afford.
The Solution is to revert back to the traditional math curriculum, Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II in 2017-2018 school year OR offer some traditional math curriculum options pathway for families to choose for their student’s math program.
Add this to the school board agenda with a plan to determine how you will meet your community needs to revert to the traditional math program, offering at a minimum options for the to take the -traditional math curriculum: Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II and the traditional math in the elementary schools.
