Advocating for Ebola awareness in Canada, ending the stigma associated with Ebola and West Africa and ultimately ending the visa ban that remains in affect on Sierra Leone and Guinea. The travel and visa bans that were issued by Canada and Australia have set a negative precedent in the ways in which the global community deals with pandemics. Our group hopes to increase awareness and push for a better health infrastructure in West African countries and countries of the Global South with support of affluent states such as Canada. The public-health crisis in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia remains critical as a result of the recent Ebola outbreak. Existing hospitals are ill-equipped, medical staff are too few, current workers exhausted, and these local health systems are near collapse. The challenge ahead for the country and sub region is beyond the needs of hospitals and medical professionals. The Ebola outbreak has revealed a deeply complicated social dimension to this type of public health crisis (http://weowntv.org/about/ebola-campaign/).
It is against this backdrop that the REI3680SU2015 Ebola Group at York University is calling on you to sign this petition as a rallying call on the international and stakeholder community to provide the needed support to communities affected by the Ebola virus, and to end the visa ban in place on Sierra Leone and Guinea by Canada.
