Mayor Wharton is receiving regular updates on this petition.  Since the termination of shelter director Ernest Alexander, nothing has been done.  Three individuals continue to be on "paid leave" at the taxpayers expense.  These individuals that are believed to be at fault have not been charged, nor have they even lost their jobs

Letter:

Mayor Wharton,

We were horrified to learn of the cruelty dogs suffered in the Memphis Animal Shelter.  It was reported a female mixed breed puppy that was brought to the shelter in August died within three weeks of what was described as "non-accidental starvation." A veterinarian said the dog had lost one-quarter of her body weight.

We the undersigned demand these employees be charged under
TENN. CODE ANN. 39-14-201 which states in part:

A person commits the crime of cruelty to animals if the person:
Intentionally or knowingly tortures, maims, grossly overworks, fails to provide necessary food, water, care or shelter for an animal, abandons, transports in a cruel manner, inflicts burns, cuts, lacerations, or other injuries or pain to any animal by any method including blistering compounds to the legs or hooves of horses.

A person commits the crime of aggravated cruelty to animals if the person:
Intentionally kills or intentionally causes serious physical injury to a companion animal.

Cruelty to animals/Aggravated cruelty.

Class A Misdemeanor.

Fine up to $2,500.

11 months, 29 days to 30 years imprisonment.

Furthermore, we demand the individuals responsible be immediately terminated from the shelter.

Sincerely,

The petition signers

I can't believe the people involved are not only NOT in jail, they are on PAID leave. That is the sickest thing I have ever heard. Not only should they NOT BE PAID, they should be doing jail time.

This is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable! We prosecute people who abuse thier children, but we turn our backs on God's helpless animals. Letting things like this go on and on does not say much for our values and morals in the south, the state of Tennessee, or our country! We should be ashamed as Americans to tolerate such disrespect for life. Hell will NOT be hot enough!!!!

The abuse of starvation is especially heinous because it is not an isolated incident in a moment of anger - it requires maintenance of the same sociopathic behavior. A human who is capable of purposely torturing an animal (smaller, weaker being) will carry the same behavior throughout life. This is a frightening realization when children and elderly (other weaker beings) are considered. Please consider the enduring emotional pathologies of the abusers when deciding how to legally handle this tragic situation.

Anyone who would do this purposely is sociopathic and a danger to Man and Animal.

To the people that have done this horrible crime, you should be ashamed of yourself and punished to the fullest extent of the law!

These are people that pledged to care for these animals. They were supposed to help them find homes and keep them healthy enough for their happily ever after. This is truly disgusting and should have severe consequences.
