Please consider signing our petition to have Stephen King items returned to the Bangor International Airport

During a visit to Washington DC, Mr. King spoke to students at the Library of Congress and made this quote...

"... if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don't, then you've got the Army, Iraq ..."

You can view the discussion in its entirety on C-SPAN's video library.

According to this story from the Bangor Daily News, troop greeters have removed Stephen King materials from the Bangor International Airport, where they would traditionally hand out King books to troops.

King has long had a policy of donating books to the troops, and usually gives about 100 books each month. In addition, King has gone so far as to sign books for members of the military passing through.

So before you consider the comment, please consider the man.  Stephen King has been an outspoken supporter of our men and women in uniform for many years.  He routinely donates to causes to benefit them.

Fans of Stephen King know that he is also very passionate about literacy and believes that a good education is one of the keys to success in this country.

Please consider all the facts and sign, its very important that soldiers headed over seas get the opportunity to enjoy his wonderful writing.

If anyone can't realize that the comment by Stephen King was directed towards high school drop outs and not those serving in the military are fools. I am in the Army and took no offense at what he said. If you don't get a good education one of the few options you have left is the Army. I truely belive that Mr. King is respectful of the military service members. I hate that I can not discover a King book that I haven't read at Bangor, because of a misinterpeted comment. I am on my second deployment and Mr. Kings is one of the few authors that I can read anything of his. Thank You, SGT Joshua L. Tucker

Being illiterate is like being half alive. As an advocate for free speech, I believe no books should ever be banned. If something offends, don't read it.

So someone is not allowed to disagree with the war??? This is America, thousands upon thousands have died for our right to speak our opinions. Where in what King said does he say he does NOT support the troops? Who runs this airport? Rush Limbaugh?

Mr. King made a comment that has caused an immense stir amongst the people of the world. This comment could have been phrased differently and would have been the cause of nothing. Just because of this comment he is being shunned and disgraced by people with nothing better to do. Get a life people.

I believe the Kings are anti-war not anti-troops. I think the remark has misinterpreted and overblown.

While I agree that there are time's in this life we all have used words we may regret ( even a master story teller it seems). I also think that we owe it to ourselves and eachother to consider our own behavior and words used in response. I support this petition, and the spirit in which it is presented.

I honestly feel this action was a mistake. A reflex reaction to the actions of a serial-blogger trying to attain fame on the coattails of a great man who, at worst, chose a poor metaphor (if that). Please, please reconsider this action. Thank you.

I am not crazy about what Mr.King said; it is at best an example of putting one's foot in it big time. I don't see, however, what it has to do with his books, which are wonderful; and depriving soldiers of them would be an act of mindless cruelty that can hardly be justified.
