Stop Cruelty to Horses - Pass the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act

  • by: Sue Lee

It's an appalling issue in the horse show industry: the painful practice of "soring" a horse to make it walk in a particular way. Will you help end this cruelty?

Even though it's against the law, some horse owners and/or handlers still intentionally inflict pain on a horse’s legs to get the animal to walk in with an unnatural gait valued in horse shows. The walk is known as the “Big Lick.”

The practice isn't just illegal -- it's also unbelievably cruel. But that hasn't stopped some unscrupulous trainers from using caustic chemicals that burn the horses’ flesh, or weighing down the animals with heavy chains and stacked horseshoes. This is a method utilized to accomplish the artificial gait that seems to be rewarded in the show ring. These poor animals are enduring undue, horrendous abuse just so the trainers and owners can triumph in the ring and gain a blue ribbon!!

No animal should suffer in this manner for human sport or pageantry. Please sign my petition now and join animal welfare champions across the country in calling on Congress to pass the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act (H.R. 3268/S. 1121) and finally end this awful practice.

Dear Decision Maker,

I urge you to pass the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, H.R. 3268/S. 1121, which would amend the current Horse Protection Act to stop the awful practice known as "soring."

To produce an unnatural gait prized in horse show rings, unscrupulous trainers will use caustic chemicals that burn the horses’ flesh or weigh down animals with heavy chains and stacked horseshoes. Soring is cruel and abusive. This awful practice must end.

Please protect these animals and be diligent in passing and enforcing the PAST. Thank you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,
