The Australian Marine environment is under severe threat. There is no doubt that there is a decline among both plant and marine aquatic species and science backs up the evidence that the reef is dying.
Numerous sea creatures and marine life is lost each year to a variety of threats, such as the Dugongs and Turtles.
Dugongs - Threats to the Dugongs includes boat strikes, the loss of marine environment health (pollution), seagrass's (vital to the Dugongs survival) are declining, however one of the most controversial but seriously problematic threats, is that these slow moving beauties are hunted fo
r food (around the world). But in Australia the dugong is also hunted legally due to the fact that these creatures are classed as a traditional food by some of the Australian Aboriginals and Torress Straight Islanders.
Turtles are one of the indicators of marine health. Green Turtles migrate vast distances around the world and return to particular islands to nest.
The Green Turtles are listed as endangered under CITES (Convention of International Trade of Endangered Species) and are protected in Australia under the EPBC Act (Environmental Protection of Biodiversity Conservation)
Threats to the Turtles includes, Disturbance of hatchlings by artifical lights, Coastal development industry, By catch, Predation, Disease, Boat strike, Temperature change of nesting beaches and the marine habitat
Before both these beautiful creatures get to critical status, we need to do the right thing and protect them.
Sometimes protecting them means to face controversial facts head on .
Please join us in signing this petition to the Australian Government, specifically Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, the Hon Tony Burke MP to take this matter seriously and change the laws and increase the protection of these beautiful creatures.
