Hong Kong: Stop violence against peaceful pro-democracy demonstration!

  • recipient: Hong Kong government

The Hong Kong Police Force has used excessive and unreasonable violence against a peaceful pro-democracy demonstration. Tear shell and pepper spray were employed; defenceless protestors were attacked.

On Friday night, a week-long sit-in by thousands of students culminated in a group of protesters entering the fenced-off Civic Square in front of the local government’s headquarters, a public area, while thousands continued to demonstrate outside. The police reacted by using pepper spray and tear shell inside and outside of the square and carrying out arrests.

The protesters are angry about Beijing's recent decision on how “universal suffrage” is to be implemented in the territory in 2017. According to the decision, voters will only have a choice from a list of two or three candidates supported by more than 50% of a nominating committee, which would be formed "in accordance with" Hong Kong's largely pro-Beijing election committee.

This is NOT democracy.

It is a violation of international law to arrest and detain people solely for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

The situation of Hong Kong needs international attention. The Police Force warns the protestors they would strengthen their actions to evacuate the area, including the use of rubber bullet and even more.

We just want democracy, not another Tiananmen Massacre. Please stand with us.
