protect our country's homeless

Target:
help change attitude and opinion of our country's homeless situation
Sponsored by:

I target this problem because for almost three years I was part of the homeless community.  A messy seperation and divorce left me with nothing monitarily and with basically nothing.  The last two years I was homeless in Las Vegas.  A town that  makes millions of money.  However, they have no compassion for their homeless what so ever.  The mayor of Las Vegas doesn't like the homeless therefore, there is not alot done for help.  Law enforcement is constantly harrassing the homeless and have almost made it illegal to be home-less.  A number of the public parks are closed to the homeless or have been closed.  One most recently, Frank Wright Park was closed on August 26th where alot of the city's  homeless hung out during the day to sleep and eat etc.  Since alot of the casinos discourage homeless into coming into their establishments.  Only two casinos condone locals.  While there is open container all through Las Vegas around Fremont and on the Strip, they are constantly locking up or ticketing homeless for open container in the parks or in  the alleys while they recycle.  While I realize there are problems with drugs, prostitution here.  In most cities where there is homelessness.  Some have mental health issues.  Our government all too often throw these people away because they don't have income and can't afford health care.  People who come to Las Vegas or any other big city it is because they hope to find financial stability in employment and get off the streets.  Las Vegas has only four shelters.  Two of these shelters only have a limited amount of beds therefore, alot of people get turned away. St. Vincent De Paul and Salvation Army provide beds that can be paid for on a regular basis.  The Rescue Mission only allows a maximum stay of two weeks unless you join one of their programs for drugs or alcohol.  What if you don't have these problems.  Not all homeless abuse substances.  The problems in Las Vegas though happen all over the country.  We have homeless beaten up by others, just for being homeless.  They are raped, robbed and killed, harrassed.  We NEED to make a change! We need to SEE a change!!!!!!!!

I think no mother with children or any person on this earth should be homeless. I do not care if they are babies or teenagers or adult children. Every Mom should have a permanent secure home her children can come to if they need a place to go to or get divorced or anything. That's why there is so many older kids in the streets sometimes, because they mom can not afford the rent or a bigger place or is on disability and moves into an adult place and can not take kids with her and so on. I think everybody with no credit, bad credit, job or no job, should be able to get a home where they can live without the fear they will be evicted, or thrown out. I think they should have a law that anyone can rent anywhere according to the income they have without restrictions and should not have to give deposit if they don't have it. I need a 2 bedroom house for me and my 2 grown teen kids who only have part times and study and being disabled on a rediculous small check, I can not move or do anything. All gov agencies housing list are closed like forever every year and I have no way of raising like $2,000 to move. What I really want is for my children to own a home they can call their own and me to live with them so when I die they don't end up homeless. I moved from Miami to Broward in Deerfield Beach because they had no low income housing there and here I had to move to a public housing 10x20 efficency for elderly or disabled and had leave my kids on their own paying a room they could not afford and had to sleep in in the car or friends houses here and there. It's a shame that me and my kids want to live and be together and we can't. Other families might want or like being sepaerated, but not us. My children are good children and we like being together. I love my children so much. Even if my kids are over 18, they are my children.

With the current amount that Welfare gives you can not live on that and must have children and a roof over your head. When you are homless you are dennied foodstamps and welfare benefits. Children are barely given the right to an education. Women who are abused and leave the abuser with hteir children find themselves homeless and are often the target for sex slavery, positution, rape, you name it. There are alot of deceant people that find themselves without work and on the streets that are forced to learn to surive or be in jail surving. There are ones that I knew that were mentaly retarded that were on the streets and no family that cared that this is were they were at, no programs to help, etc. We need to protect our homeless and help to lower the crime rate and what happens to our people that have disablities, children, etc. wjp are homeless.

I was homeless in CA for years but now work overseas (I have a degree). Ive known well educated people, good people, and kind people and some that just had problems dealing with life that were homeless. Instead of pushing anti abortion they should be taking care of the people we already have. Our planet is dying of overpopulation. Australia took in so many immigrants they are going to have to ration water. Moving people from one country to another doesn't solve the problem. Its a finite planet with finite countries and this country should be helping its own instead of other countries and peoples.

I have seen so many homeless treated like garbage. No one asks to be homeless. In today's economy more and more people are losing their jobs and homes which leaves them nowhere else to go. The homeless need our help and compassion, not derision and abuse.

Shame on Las Vegas for keeping the prostitutes safe while the homeless get tossed aside. Good Luck.

I am a true independent voter with libertarian leanings. Nevertheless if there were anything for which I want my hard earned tax money to go it is into feeding sheltering and protecting the homeless.

It's true, Las Vegas's homeless are treated like trash. Many are wonderful people down on their luck with not many to help them. We need more support to make it plausible to ensure a decient quality of life for our homeless.

I was homeless for almost three years. For the moment, I am not. Hopefully, I won't ever be again. However, I don't want to ever forget where I have been. I was raped twice, and almost beaten to death with my ex-boyfriend last year, when an intruder beat me and my ex-boyfriend with rebarb. Things need to change altogether in order to help our brothers and sisters who don't have anywhere to go.
