URI athletics continues to fail to perform up to standards of the past. Just 10 or 11 short years ago URI posted 7 A10 championships out of 21 teams with 3 coaches of the year awards and ranked 2nd in the A10 for the third consecutive year. This was accomplished with 1 AD and 3 associate AD’s. 2014 ended with one of the lowest winning seasons in school history with just 18 teams ranking in the cellar of the A10 under 1 AD and now 7 associate AD’s in addition to 2 full time fund raisers and a contracted sports marketing company. Competitive programs are needed to generate fan interest that has deteriorated over several years, increase university support and nationally promote the University of Rhode Island as a top tier educational institution. We propose the creation of a URI Athletic Department Alumni Advisory Board effective September 1, 2014. The role of this board will to be to provide the present athletic department administration guidance and suggestions from an experienced business perspective that may be helpful to maximize each existing sport and build interest nationwide.
The board will be comprised of 6 to 8 members who are alumni of the university with a chair and co-chair. By-laws will be the first task followed by an agenda for improvement. There will be no existing athletic staff, faculty or student participants. However, athletic staff, faculty and students will be invited to meet with the board to present ideas and suggestions. A bi-annual report will be presented to the university president with recommendations.
The intent of this board will be to provide constructive advice and support to the present and future athletic department administration understanding the difficulties that exist within the state of RI.
