No to Sex Education for 4 years old children in Tower Hamlets

The Government seems to have decided that four is the right age for children to start learning about sex.

The Government has confirmed plans for compulsory sex education lessons in schools for 4-year-olds. Tower Hamlets schools will be given a choice how they will discharge that function but the classes may be compulsory.

We support and share concerns by Andrea Williams of Christian Concern and would like to ask the Mayor to make strong representations, on a cross party-bais, on behalf of the parents to stop sex education to be introduced in Tower Hamlets schools at the age of 4 and report back to the residents and local councillors.

Dear Mayor Biggs

No to Sex Education for 4 years old children in Tower Hamlets

The Government seems to have decided that four is the right age for children to start learning about sex.

The Government has confirmed plans for compulsory sex education lessons in schools for four-year-olds – Tower Hamlets schools will be given a choice how they will discharge that function but the classes may be compulsory.

We understand that the lessons, in theory, have been argued to be ‘age-appropriate’ and would focus on issues including staying safe online, sexting and abusive relationships. We welcome this in principle for slightly older children, particularly given the threat online and advances in the technology, and therefore the need to update the policy.

However, studies have shown that children under the age of 10 do not generally think of sexual activities or relationships. So, sex education for little children – as young as 4 and 5 years is completely unnecessary in our schools.

In fact, exposing children to sex at this young age from 4 to 10 might be counterproductive, and is the same as showing ‘red to a bull’ because what you don't know you don't miss.

There is no proven evidence that exposing children to sexual information has reduced adolescent sex, pregnancy or an unhealthy interest in pornography. It should be a matter for the parents to decide if their young children should be exposed to sexual information.

Yes, we must appreciate sexual awareness and education but it should be in later stages in the young person’s life - at least over 10/11/12 years old individuals.

Andrea Williams, chief executive at Christian Concern, said that:

Teaching sex education to four-year-olds would be "devastating" and risks "robbing them of their innocence".

"Children of four should not be introduced to this. Schools need to be safe places where the innocence of children is protected," she said.

"Very often sex education introduces children to concepts far too soon, destroying their innocence. This is not something that the state should be laying down. We are very concerned about this."

We support and share genuine and serious concerns raised by Andrea Williams of Christian Concern and would like to ask the Mayor to make strong representations on behalf of the parents to stop sex education to be introduced in Tower Hamlets schools at the age of 4 and report back to the residents and local councillors.

Your sincerely

The Residents of Tower Hamlets
