Justice for Daisy & Kaylee

August 22, Director for the Sikeston Area Humane Society, Trace White, received a text containing an image of a severely emaciated dog along with the address where the dog was located.

White immediately contacted Sikeston Animal Control Officer, Joe Johnson, who in turn contacted Sikeston City Police Department.

White, Johnson, and two Sikeston police officers went to the Montgomery Street property, where they found two dogs chained outside, severely emaciated, and in need of emergency care.

While police spoke with the residents of the home, White and Johnson loaded both dogs for transport back to the shelter.

Kaylee, a Feist breed, was alert and responsive, although noticeably underweight.

Daisy, the Great Dane was in such condition that when White attempted to lead her to the transport, she collapsed and could not get back up. White had to carry the dog, which was so underweight, White was able to lift her with just one hand.

Both dogs were determined to be approximately 2 years old, severely malnourished and underweight. A Feist breed should weigh between 18 and 24 lbs. while Kaylee weighs only 10 lbs. Weight averages for a Great Dane of Daisy’s age is 110-145 lbs. Daisy weighs in at a mere 36.4 lbs.

Kaylee tested positive for parasites and is currently being treated for such. She’ll remain on a special diet until she recovers her weight and will later be further tested for any other complications.

Daisy is extremely heartworm positive. She has been without food for such an extended period of time that her bowels were completely void of stool, so no sample could be taken to test for other parasites. Daisy will also be on a special diet.

It is the hope of the Sikeston Area Humane Society that both animals can be restored to good health in the coming days and weeks, and placed with rescues.

The Animal Control Department for the City of Sikeston was contacted, but was unable to make a comment on the case pending further investigation.
