Please Cease Plans To Sterilize Wild Horses with Barbaric Procedures

Wild horses are beautiful animals with a free spirit who are still under scrutiny by the BLM to make room for livestock on public lands.  Some plans to control these animals is through roundups, captivity, slaughter and most recently through sterilization.  Read more on this concern at http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/shut-down-u-s-governments-plans-to-sterilize-wild-horses/

The document shows that the wild horse population is already dwindling while there are millions of sheep and cattle roaming into their terrain.  As the director of the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign states, “We don’t have an overpopulation of wild horses. We have an overpopulation of livestock on our public lands.” The method of sterilization as described and planned would be barbaric, painful and cruel for the animals.  It is disturbing and immoral that such plans exist that would endanger the lives of these majestic animals and their young.

The effort in this petition is to encourage the BLM and the government to cease all plans to carry out this sterilization program and such barbaric measures of controlling their populations.  You can help to take action on this vital issue by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and comments that will help these horses.

BLM & U. S. Congress – Please ensure that you take crucial measures in protecting burrow and majestic wild horses by banning the sterilization and slaughter plan of these beloved icons as contained in the President’s 2017 budget.  Such plans would be barbaric and cruel.  Please prohibit the surgical sterilization of wild free-roaming horses on the range, which was recommended against by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) due to its inherent and life-threatening surgical risks and impacts to natural behaviors. We strongly urge you to oppose any efforts to subvert and amend the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act through the 2017 appropriations legislation that would allow you to strip captured wild horses of their protected legal status and turn them over to local and state authorities, many of whom want them removed and slaughtered. We ask that you seek more humane and acceptable methods regarding the wild horse and burro population that does not involve mass roundups, removals, dangerous sterilization methods and slaughter.  We Americans want our iconic wild horses and burros to remain roaming wild and free across the American West. Please ban this outrageous attempt to subvert the letter and spirit of the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act that was unanimously passed by Congress in 1971. Do not allow this barbaric sterilization of these beautiful creatures.
