Content warning: abuse and neglect of vulnerable children
It looks like a clip from a found-footage horror film. The sickening video shows children tied to their beds, including one little boy with his arms twisted up behind his head. Other children are kept in cages. Another little girl is locked in a room behind a glass panel. She tries to kiss her rescuers through the glass.
This footage shot by activists reveals the hidden truth not only of the care home they infiltrated, but of 85 centres across Greece. Care homes housing over 3,000 children and adults with a range of disabilities have been found to be abusing and neglecting their residents. Isolation, severe restriction and excessive drugging are rife.
Social time, play, communication, freedom of movement - these basic experiences are being taken away from some of the most vulnerable people in Greek society.
The UN committee of human rights has released a report that supports these shocking findings. In response to the revelations the Institute of Child’s Health, an arm of the Greek government, has taken limited steps in highlighted institutions. But the scale and speed of the intervention is far from what is needed.
Please sign this petition to demand a nationwide intervention into abuse and neglectful practices in disabled care homes, and improved quality of life for residents in care homes across Greece within the next six months. Let the government know that the residents can't wait and must be helped NOW!
