GoFundMe: Stop Funding Alt-Right Troll Milo Yiannopoulos' Speaking Tour

  • by: Kailey L.
  • recipient: Dan Pfeiffer, VP of Communications at GoFundMe

In 2016, Twitter banned Milo Yiannopoulos  for hate speech and threatening language against SNL star Leslie Jones. She received graphic content, physical threats, and racist tweets over 300,000 times. Twitter banned Yiannopoulos for life.

There are now GoFundMe pages dedicated to paying for Yiannopoulos' security fees on his college speaking tour.

Milo Yiannopoulos is regarded as the spokesperson for the group that refers to themselves as the "alt-right," which is basically a neo-Nazi group. Yiannopoulos and the alt-right are known for their anti-women, anti-black, anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim rhetoric.

GoFundMe offers a great service and supports some incredible causes. But the site also has a user service policy that prohibits "the promotion of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, terrorism, or intolerance of any kind relating to race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender or gender identity, or serious disabilities or diseases."

GoFundMe campaigns supporting Yiannopoulos, whose entire brand is built on hate speech, are against the site's user service terms.

Like Twitter, GoFundMe must denounce hateful rhetoric. The words of Yiannopoulos incite violence and threaten the safety of women, people of color, trans people, and more.
