Tell The Young Turks: Rape is Not a Joke

  • by: Persephone Hallow
  • recipient: American News Organization: The Young Turks (http://www.tytnetwork.com/)

Recently, The Young Turks produced a six-minute segment, detailing the story of a Mumbai man recently granted a divorce because his wife was sexually demanding. However, the details of the story revealed a different picture: the man was being raped by his former wife. His allegations include that he was "administered medicines" by the former spouse and "forced to consume liquor" in order to pressure him into sex. The story also points out that "[The former spouse] used to force him into having unnatural sex and whenever he tried to resist it, she would abuse him, following which he had to succumb to her pressure and persistent demands."

During their discussion of the story, host Cenk Uygur describes the alleged rapist as "an Indian hero", and suggests she be "given a medal." His co-hosts on the panel (Ana Kasparian, Ben Mankiewicz and Wes Clark Jr) then go on to laugh and joke about the man's abuse, refusing to acknowledge that the man was systematically raped and abused by a former partner.

If you believe that all rape is wrong, that men can be raped by women, and that rape victims should not be laughed at, please sign to show The Young Turks that rape is a heinous crime, not a joke, and that their handling of this story was completely inappropriate. Please stand up against disturbing news coverage that condones rape and treats victims as the butt of a sick joke.
