Forbid the import of wild animals in Cyprus to be sold as pets

While animal-loving citizens and shelters are desperately trying to cope with more than 300 000 stray cats and dogs in Cyprus (a number that is growing every day due to uncontrolled reproduction and to abandoned pets), the legislation allows for the import and sale of wild animals, such as kangaroos, ostriches, lamas and deers to be sold as pets.

These wild animals are not only deprived of their natural habitat, but they are also forced to live in confinement, while the Cyprus climate may, in some cases, not even be suitabe for their well being.

We demand a change of legislation, forbidding the import and sale of these animals as pets.

The consequences of this unacceptable situation are obvious, while the regular cases of attacks by such imported animals confirm the necessity for taking appropriate measures. These wild animals are not only deprived of their natural habitat, but they are also forced to live in confinement, while the Cyprus climate may, in some cases, not even be suitable for their well being.

We, the  undersigned, demand a change of legislation, forbidding the import and sale of these animals as pets.
